I have a 1998 Yahama 40 HP 2 stroke tiller controlled outboard.
It has been running flawlessly until this year. It used to start always on the first or second try when I turn the key for the electric start. Now it takes up to 10 ten times to start it and keep going. It will start for a brief time after 3 or 4 trys but then dies. It does this over and over again.
Battery and gas are good.
Wondering if it is a choke issue. This version has an automaticc choke and all you do is turn the ignition key to start.
Hurting the fishing time.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Work Release

As I understand it you should push the key in before or as you turn it to engage the choke.

i agree with with the above answer try pushing in the key and looking at the choke on the outboard to make sure its working correctly also if you can make sure its operating the flap properly james

Re: Yahama 40 HP cold start Problem

The choke is used by pushing the key towards in many outboards but I have never seen a Yamaha with "key choke" used by pushing the key towards the controller(I still may be wrong.) I just think the choke solenoid has broken and these new yamahas are adjusted to use as small amount of gas as possible what makes it nearly impossible to cold start without choke. I have a 40 hp yammu too but it is -91 model and it has a choke button for the solenoid under the key.My motor is also nearly impossible to cold start without choke. You can take off your eng cover so that you can see all the three carburators, there should be a linkage that is connected to the choke solenoid and to all butterflies in those carbs. Check if it is moving when you cold-start your outboard, if not, try to move it with hand and try starting at the same time. The "fast idle" does not help if choke is not working it only makes motor to stall.

Eki, that's how it works on my Yam 40. Push the key and a solonoid closed the choke. Same on my other motor Suz DT55.

Try pushing the starting key towards your controller as Adam1 says ,he might know this thing better than I do. If it does not move closer your controller when pushing, there is no any manual choke in your outboard, Work Release. My friend has the -2000 year version of the same 40 hp yammu with auto choke and it really does not have any manual choke, only the fast idle and choke activates when cold starting (I m not 100% sure but it allways starts without idling when cold, and I know there is no "key choke" in his outboard. Ill check the choke system on that motor this week if I see my friend.
