Hi! I bought a boat last week with a yahama 40 converted to a 50. The question i have is that i drained the oil in my lower head and now am trying to fill it back up. Do i fill it from the bottom or from the top with both plugs out? I have been trying to fill it from the top and am having a hard time with the hole being so small.

The other question i have is......what is the plug for left to the "oil level" plug. It has the word "wash" over it but is the size as the "oil level" plug.

I am new to this so bear with me. Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks!

oh. the motor is a 91

First -- its a gearcase, not a head. Yes, its filled from the bottom. Dept stores that sell marine stuff have cheap pumps that fit the gear lub bottle. Screw it into the lower hole, pump the lub in until it comes out the top hole. Insert the top plug, then remove the lub hose and insert the bottom plug. I have no idea what the other screw is you mention.

The another plug is a "wash" plug. You can connect a hose coupling (comes with new motor)to that and use the engine(low RPM)for example when the boat is on the trailer.

Here is a good step-by-step guide for you to change the oil in the gearcase:

http://www.nissanmarine.com/tech_talk/oil_change.html

Thanks for the info! i got it now. so the wash plug serves the same purpose as if i would put the muffs on and crank it on the trailer?
