Yam 115 4-stroke problems

I have two 2001 of these motors on a 2650 ProKat WA, with about 250 hours on them. I've had to replace (both) fuel pumps on one engine and now, for the 2nd time, I have VLT tanks clogged with debris in both engines.<br />I dont think I've had 'bad gas', and do keep the engines properly maintained. Anyone have similar problems, or care to comment?<br />Thanks.

Somebody had a recent comment on a post here about the rubber fill hoses on their built in fuel tanks deteriorating and gumming up their filters and engines. Sounds on the surface like it is your tanks and piping and not the engines thats the problem.

No problem with my F115's. Sounds like you have a fuel contamination problem.

I have the 2002 2850 with twin F225s and have had no problems with the motors (about 110 hours). Still haven't found a good spot to mount a set of Racors or similiar filters, which I think should be done. What are VLT tanks?

JimD... Thanks.. that's BIG news. I looked for the comment on iboat, but couldnt find it, yet. IF that is the case (hoses) I probably would never have found it. I could have put new motors on, cleaned the tanks, and still not solved it.<br />I dont know what VST tanks are (vapor ?? tank?). It took the mechanic 3 hours to take it apart, clean it, and put it back together, with new gaskets.<br />I appreciate all comments. Thanks.

Bear... Thanks for your interest and reply.<br />However, I do not see a connection between a flat ball, and my VST tanks getting debris in them; nor JimDs' suggestion of a gas line hose deteriorating, and causing debris. I admit most of this if 'over my head'. I will pass all this info to my mechanic/dealer, and hopefully it will help. <br />Once again, thank you.

I'm confusing the issue. The problem is with VST tanks (not VLT). I just checked my 1st bill. Sorry about that. <br />I still dont know what they are. My bill says "removed DFI system and removed VST tank found debris inside system cleaned and resetup for customer tested good". Maybe that will help.<br />Thanks to all.

VST would be the Vapor Separator Tubes or Tanks.<br /><br />There is a drain at the bottom of the Vapor Separator. If you store the outboard for any extended periods without draining the Vapor Separator it can damage the fuel line. Probably what happened to you.<br /><br />Running a Racor between your tank and outboard is a "must" IMO.

"Racor" is just a popular brand name for marine fuel/water filters. Sounds like you already have something similar. That's good. <br /><br />Given the fact that you're filtered well, I was thinking that you could be running a fuel with too much ethanol. This can eat away at the outboard's fuel system. Make sure your fuel is less than 10% ethanol.

To All... I accidentally found Iboat.com yesterday. I often use boatered.com. Iboat.com is very impressive. It's like comparing my corner Hardware store to Home Depot. JimD, I may have found what you were refering to. Since my boat is only 2 years old I'm not sure the hoses would be deteriorating yet. CassM,<br />Yup, that's the one. Hope whatever it is you find out before the weather warms up so you can get out on the water. I was out last weekend and the water was so cold in St. Pete it hurt my feet when I launced the boat. I don't know how those people up north do it. It would be interesting to get a good look at the nature of the contaminated sediment your mechanic removed from the VST tanks to attempt to track down where it came from. Was it aluminum corrosion, rust(ferrous), dirt, rubber, sludge(aqueous or other), or CUO (crud of undetermined origin). Good luck

JimD, Yes, we are interested in what is causing this problem also. It's hard to get cooperation from the people doing the work, to talk to the mechanic. He is in/out before I know about it.<br />My two sons and I fish the Middle Grounds. We usually go out Fri nite, with radar, (from the Anclote river), drop a line before daylite, and return to the Marina before sundown on Sat. We went out Dec. 29 and our best ever, with 3 men: 15 Grouper (our limit) and about 200 lbs total. A couple weeks later was only 3 grouper and 100 lbs. Both times it was COLD.<br />Have a good day.

Update-just returned from talking to the mechanic. There was no varnish (debris) in the VST tank. The VST tank holds gas, just before it goes to the injectors. There is a small needle valve that opens/closes, that is damaged. This caused gas to leak back into the engine. Bad part. Why? who knows. I hope it will be under warranty.<br />Thought some of you would like to know what happened. Have a great day.
