I recently changed the water pump, and I failed to replace the lower unit properly so that the gear wasn't properly contacted to drive the prop. When I pushed both motors up, the motor in question over-revved to around 5800 rpm. I returned the motor to neutral and it quit running. I tried to restart but it just sputtered for 1 or 2 secs and quit. I returned to the marina and lowered the lower unit, seated it correctly, and tightened it back up. The motor still won't start. It definitely wants to (it turns over, even backfires, runs for 1 or 2 secs and shuts off). Spark plugs, fuses, wiring, etc. is good. So I was thinking it was a fuel problem, but why did it start right up 30 minutes earlier? So now I'm thinking the computer won't let it start due to over-revving the motor. If so, how do I reset the computer to check that? I've disconnected the batteries and reconnected, but nothing. Is there a trick to it or do I have to have a tech do it? Am I way off? Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.
