Hello, I have a Yamaha 115 4-Stroke, currently with 235 hours and 160 compression. My question is, when do I need to do a rebuild? I see many motors with less hours (or they are bragging that they have over 500 hours on their motors....which to me is not that much) and they already have a new powerhead, been rebuilt etc... Do I need to start considering a rebuild? Thanks for any input....

you still have a lot of life left in that motor...just do the required maintenance on a timely basis...I think you've got a timing belt change coming either at 300 or 500 hours...check your manual8)

scrap the compression test on that engine, its useless.
use a leak down test.
if well maintained, more importantly kept correctly propped for the load, and run hard, your not really quite broke in.
run ring free, have a true decarb with the yamaha injector system, not just a spray can, once a year and maintain the cooling system. keep the incoming fuel clean with at least a 10 micron filter, try to run it above 4000 RPM and 3500 hours is fairly normal, 5000 hours I see occasionally.
usually something external to the motor kills it long before it wears out.
I have seen a few that the rings rotated and the gaps lined up.
so far no cure for that.

Hey Rodbolt, just curious as to why the compression test wouldn't work?
