I am getting my new to me 02 yamaha 115 2 stoke ready for my first season with her including water pump service and new thermostats. My friend who had a F225 4 stoke mentioned changing the anodes, he/we assumed it had block anodes similar to the F225. In the attached screen shot of the exploded view it shows 2 anodes per side #14 but they look to be in the water jackets under the cylinder head. Does Yamaha really expect you to remove the head to replace these? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, Yamaha expects the cylinder heads to be removed to gain access to the anodes.

Yamaha manuals are written on the premise that a maintainer has a basic level of mechanical ability.

If someone needs detailed step by step instructions as to how to remove and replace the cylinder heads and to gain access to the block anodes perhaps they should not being doing the replacement.

Pulling the heads on a 2 cycle engine is an order of magnitude easier than pulling the head on a OHC 4 cycle engine. However, neither of these activities are part of a basic level of mechanical ability, IMO. That would be limited to spark plugs, fuel filters and gearoil, grease etc.

To the point, I worked on a 4 cycle Yammie 150HPOB. I found anodes in the water jacket interior as well as exterior of the engine. I suspect Yamaha tried to fix their corrosion issue with the anodes. I don't know if it worked.

Yamaha makes some serious money on oil changes and other routine maint. I suspect that they expect to be paid to replace those anodes.

My neighbor has twin HDPI 225 Yammies (early 2000's) on his boat. He claimed that one of the heads corroded thru, allowing water into the cylinder. Maybe anodes address that? All I know is that my Mercs and Johnnyrudes never had a head corrode thru, and they were far older.

I fully understand and am capable of removing the heads. Biggest concern there is breaking head bolts. I think ill just leave them. This is a 24 year old engine with unknown hours on it used in salt water. The boat is new to me and if I decide I love it would consider a 4 stroke repower. For now it runs great has good compression so I going to just have fun with it. These 115 2 stroke Yamahas seem to be good engines and are still wanted. Thanks for all the input.

Looking forward to warmer days and the smell of a 2 stroke.
