Went to take a ride today, and my 20 amp fuse, that controlls the trim and tilt AND main switch blew, this is the third time in the last operating hour. At first my brother went to put the motor up and it got about 3 inches and clicked, then I changed the fuse and I tried, it blew it again. It did that also before, when coming home I adjusted it and when I stopped on a sand bar it wouldnt start, same fuse everytime. What could be causing this? It is a 04 yamaha 150hp 4stroke.

hello
someting on the ign circuit is drawing to much current. is any thing else other than the gauges attached to the engine wiring?
the 20 amp ign fuse will support the engine and gauges but noting more.

I found two wires one coming out from under the throttle control and one coming from the side hooked together. That means that two gauge wires were hooked up to itself. Could that be the problem? I checked everything else over and the cables are good, as well as the battery connections.

Do you have trim switches hooked into the system that are not Yamaha such as a bow or stern switch? If so disconnect and test. What color where the two wires hooked together? If yellow and blue it should not be the source of the problem. They are both postive leads that go hot with the switch.

I was careless and didnt look. They were from two different wire groups, it may have been. No such switches. This is a relatively new motor and this is the first time I have had problems with a Yamaha.

Check the wiring harness at the trim switches. I have seen the wires skint where the harness was run and allowing a wire to ground to the block or cowling. I have also seen it happen where aftermarket guages were used and the trim guage was not grounded seperately from the Yamaha harness. The wiring can get tricky when using aftermarket guages.

Well, I disconnected the rpms gauge, and I went on a short 30 miles trip and it seemed to have worked, thanks.
