I have a 2003 Yamaha 2 stroke 150 hp outboard and a couple of the guage features are not working. Speedometer does not register, ever. Engine tilt/plane always shows engine all the way down (all bars showing). Oil injector reservoir guage never changes. (not sure what it is supposed to look like) and Water temp guage does not work.

Tach works o.k., hour meter o.k., battery meter o.k. Time and trip display o.k. Fuel guage works now after installing a new sending unit.

Can anywone help?

Thanks
Bob

Re: Yamaha 2003 150hp guages

check your trim sender. its located on the steering tube. they can stick and the sender cams tend to break. all bars showing indicates full up not down.
if you have an analog tack the dip switches need to be set for 2 lead trim,12 pole alternator and 2 stroke.
if not set for 2 stroke it wont work.
depending on the tach you will have 3 bars,3 arrows or lamps. if the system works correctly it will simply indicate the remote oil tank has enough for transfer, if the center bay lights or flashes it will indicate the remote is low, all 3 flashing and an audible indicate the engine tank has about 15 min of oil left.
on the speedo, check/clean the pitot intake. its on the leading edge of the gearcase very small hole and it tends top collect debris.

the water temp guage may be bad or the sender may have failed. with the key on jump between the sender and ground, needle should deflect. attach an ohm meter to the sender terminal, with the sender wire removed, to ground, start the engine cold and watch for a changing resistance, no change means bad sender.

Re: Yamaha 2003 150hp guages

Thanks Rodbolt.
Oil guage: must be working properly, I thought it had a level indicator. Mine has the arrows, (and the dots ...are those lamps? they don't iluminate when I start the ignition) Tank has been kept full since I bought it in May.

Speedometer: is the hole on the very leading edge of the case? or just to the side a couple inches back? Mine has what looks like a small shot pin bearly visible in the leading edge sticking through????

You were exactly right on the trim. The cam was broken. I manually checked it by pushing it with my finger and watching the guage, it works....just need the collar/stop.

Tach: working great, about the only thing, and it is digital.

I'll check the water temp meter, thanks again.....bob
