I have a 2004 50 hp 4 stroke yamaha outboard which is carburated that is set up from the dealer as a tiller. The motor is perfect in all aspects except one. When its cold (and i'm not referring to the outside temperature) it will always start but the problem is, i have to turn the key 4-5 times because it sounds like the starter disengages after 2 seconds or so. When the engine in warm starts like it should. Is this a solonoid or starter problem, i have checked battery connections and all are shinny and clean with Dialectic grease coating. Thank you :)inadvance for your help, as this is my first time on this site!!o:)

Thank you I will do that, does anyone else have a suggestion? Again the problem is the starter disengages and makes a mechanical noise before the engine starts. So i have to turn the key several times before the engine starts. Any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Yamaha 2004 50 Hp 4 Stroke starting issue

Riverboy,

i have the same problem but with a 2003 60 hp carburettor 4 stroke and i am yet to find a solution. sometimes the starter disengages before the motor starts thus the need to turn the key again. i have had a new starter motor, new flywheel but to no avail.

I bet if you check your motor with the emergency lanyard pulled the same thing will happen. My undersatnding is that the motor should continue to crank until you release the key. This is not the case, and even with the lanyard out sometimes the starter will disengage and not crank the motor. I have tried everything but i think it is a design fault with those motors having an old crappy inertia drive starter motor.

I think it is to do with compression kick back with the inertia drive starter motor causing the load to go off the starter allowing the bendix spring to push starter motor drive down out of the flywheel.

Another possibilty is that the prime start is to clever for itself and thinks that the motor has already started. how this affects the load on the starter motor i don't know

It will be interesting for other owners out there to reply, to see if at anytime when they turn the key the motor fails to crank or the starter disengages.

Good luck,

The only other info i have been told was from a yamaha tech on the phone. He said it was the solonoid not the starter but before i go replacing things i wanted to check here. I too am interested to see what other have to say.

Normally ,you would expect the problem to be too much voltage drop at the starter. Start at the battery and retighten the hot and ground connections all of the way to the starter.
