Yamaha 200hp - Tach not reading correct RPM

Okay my newest problem I can't seem to find an answer for is why my brand new tach reads the wrong RPM? The old tach was faded, the numbers all but gone, the needle bounced erratically and showed like 4K rpm at idle. I found a new one in the box on ebay with the correct part number and hooked it up. Now the needle is stable like it should be but I read 1500 rpm at idle and over 7K rpm at what is basically full throttle. What gives? I can't figure it out. The wires all match up color wise, the indicator lights work like they should too. My Seloc has no answers for me.

there should be a small multi-position screw/switch on the back which has about 3 or 4 different settings, just turn that screw with a very small screwdriver to each setting until you get your correct reading. I put in a new tach a couple of years ago and I believe the setting was in the instructions, but guess you didn't get that with yours. hope this helps and good luck!

Nope no instructions came with my tach. So for a 1987 200hp Yamaha what pulse setting is it? Anyone? Rodbolt?

take a small screwdriver and move that multi-position screw on the back of your tachometer until you get the correct reading. There are about 4 different positions, try each one until correct.

I'm lazy, I'll end up doing that but if someone knew the answer it would save me five minutes.

200 hp is 6 pulse or 12 pole depending on how the tach is marked.

Thanks, my old tach was set to 12 and I am hoping it was shot which is why the needle bounced so much. After reading these posts I looked at it to see its setting.

the tach on my boat was doing the same thing as your old. i replaced it with an aftermarket tach from bass pro and it works like a charm now. Thanks Rodbolt btw, i was interested in how the pole/pulse setting was gauged as well. Mines a 200hp as well and i set it to 12p and it works great on first crank :) thanks all!
