I have a 200 yamaha, I believe it is a 90 model. The trim/tilt has given me problems in the past, but has just required topping off the fluid. Now one of the lower pistons operates, but the main and other side piston do not. I have topped off the fluid, to the best of my ability considering the precarious position of the tiny fill hole! When I take the piston out of the cylinder, there is air behind it which seeps out as i unscrew it. The fluid is also milky denoting air in the system. The pump and electrical portion work fine. What should I do to get this thing working properly? Any suggestions would be much appreciated as my frustration level is increasing.

The fluid being milky usually means water in the fluid. Sounds like time to rebuild or replace.

What position is the outboard when you top off the fluid (up/down)? I have a 97 115 and my book says to only check fluid in the tilt up position. You may just have to bleed the system. I'm sure someone else here will know for sure.

Well, the main ram is up, and one of the trim rams is up but the other one is down. I think you are definitely right about bleeding the system, but have no idea how to go about that. I also think along with air in the system there may be some water. The fluid is pink and bubbly when i take out the ram. I think i might take the whole thing off, drain all of the fluid out and start with some fresh fluid. If anyone knows how to get rid of the air please let me know. :)

You bleed the air by triming the engine all of the way out and down for several times. The engine should be in the full tilt mode to fill. I use a machinist oil can with a long flexible spout to fill.
