I have twin 2001 Yamaha 200 hpdi's that have aprox 900hrs. Serviced regularly. Run in salt water entire lives, but no major corrosion issues visible. Recently port engine has been difficult to trim. Port is either slower than other or does not move with single switch on benical mount of throttles. I have to go to individual port trim switch and rock it back and forth several times before getting response and it seems to be a slower move once I get response. Clicks several times while rocking either the throttle switch or the engine cowling switch up and down before getting a response. I have a tournament coming up this weekend and don't want to take it to shop, but also don't want to get stuck with an issue during tourny. Any suggestions? New to website...thanks in advance.

Re: Yamaha 200hpdi Trim Issue

This morning I cleaned the plug on the port side of the outboard just above the outboard trim button. It looked good, but cleaned it anyhow and connected again. I followed the "clicking" noise to the starboard side of the motor and it sounds as if it is coming from somewhere near the fuses. I went back and found what I think is the relay. I put a test light to it and feel certain I have it. I cleaned the last of the connections with no better result. My question is, can the relay be going bad, but still work on occasion? If so, I will replace it. It looks easy enough...hope I didn't just jinx myself.
Thanks again in advance for any input.

Re: Yamaha 200hpdi Trim Issue

I have twin 2000, 200 HPDI's 900 hrs, as well. I had that problem about six months ago and had to replace the single motor rocker switch pretty simple job. When the switch was failing, it worked intermittently. When it finally went, The motor trimmed up on its own! The binacle cover is a little hard to remove, but the switches are plug & play. They weren't cheap as I recall, but I did both single switches, while I had it off. Works fine now.

I appreciate your input, but can you better explain where that switch is. Are you talking about the single trim switch at the throttle bennical? And you recommend to change them both while the cover is off. I can understand that, especially if the cover was a pain. I definitely don't need the motor to trim up while I am 60 miles offshore. That would make for a long ride home on one.
Thanks again.

Yep....my problem was the black plastic rocker swith on the binacle. For a few months, it would work if you putzed around with it, then, when it died completely, the contact for "up" stayed closed. It happened out of the blue while backing into a tight slip. Engine coming up while running scared the P*** out of me and made for quite a fire drill.
