Friends,
I own a 1987 225 Excel that has been having I think fuel flow problems at 3/4 to full throttle. It sounds like the motor is not getting enough gas and the bulb is more easily collapsable than usual though it does not completely collapse. It seems like if I pump the bulb while underway this improves the problem. On the Excel I am having a hadr time locating the fuel filter or pump. I would appreciate any assistance with diagnosing this problem. Thanks.
Charlie

Re: Yamaha 225 Excel fuel Flow ( Help needed!)

There are two fuel pumps mounted on the port side of the intake. The filter is also mounted there. On those models I highly reccomend bypassing the quick disconnect fuel connecter with a straight line and also the filter itself. Installation of a fuel water seperator in the line will take the place of the engine mounted filter. There is no real doubt the problem is caused by a fuel restriction. It could also be the time to replace those fuel pumps and have the carbs gone through. A fuel restriction will quickly kill that powerhead.Much cheaper to be sure the problem is cured.

Ray thanks for the good advice. I know the fuel pumps have not been replaced in 10 years so it is probably well worth the investment. Are you suggesting just removing the inline filter? The water seperator on my Grady (24' Offshore '85) is under the floor near the transom. Thanks again for the advice. Keep the suggestions coming.
Regards,
Charlie

I am suggesting you eliminate the complete filter assembly and make sure the present water seperator filter is fresh or use the one reccommended by Rodbolt, The restriction caused by the engine mounted filter is in the assembly itself and not the small filter enclosed in it.

Ray, is this suggestion only for the excel model or should I think about eliminating the under cowl filter assembly on my 89' 200?

Cheers... Canuck 16.
