Maybe a dumb question but its a new motor to me. 1996 yamaha 250 carbed. Whats the procedure for setting the choke? My old merc was done by pushing in the key but that doesn't seem to be the case on the yamaha. There is a small switch below the ignition key. I'm guessing that may be it but was wondering how it works.

Re: Yamaha 250 Choke

The way I do it is activate the choke and crank over the engine for 2-3 seconds. Release the choke, advance the warm up lever a little and crank over the engine until it is started. Don't immediately activate the choke again if it does not start. If your carbs are in good shape you should not need to choke it again. Every engine will start differently. Once you get it started let the engine warm up. Don't immediately romp on it. Don't forget about you emergency stop lanyard.
