Yamaha 250 HPDI--Buying a problem??

I've found a used boat that is exactly what I want, but it has a 2003 Yamaha 250 HPDI on it (very low hours since it was installed on this 2005 model boat as a leftover new engine.) I've searched this forum for HPDI issues and there sure are a lot of 'em! I'm about to be scared off this perfect boat. Are my fears of the engine justified? Does anyone have anything good to say about the HPDI, especially the early models? Appreciate your input.

If you are prepared to maintain the motor then this is a great motor....if you don't want to get it serviced(or do it yourself) then this isn't the motor for you....the great majority of what you've seen on here is from user error or neglect....these motors are on the expensive side to maintain is all(the fuel filters, especially in VST tank).....but nobody makes a better motor....

Thanks for the advice. Since I would be keeping the boat in the water, any service would require a fairly lengthy trip by water or haulout on trailer and 45 min . drive to dealer. Not sure if I'll buy, but will start by talking to servicing dealer to gauge his attitude to servicing motor not bought there. (Memo to self: never fall in love with another boat!)

make sure all the link rod,oil pump and ECU updates were performed.
the early run 250 HPDI motors were lass than stellar.

Re: Yamaha 250 HPDI--Buying a problem??

Hi
I am currently a owner of a 250 HPDI VMAX 2003 years model and has started to experience some problems. The problem I have is that the engine has started to loose rpm and it feels like all cylinders are not engaged. I have only had it for a year and last summer I had no problems at all.
Me and my mechanic have scratched our heads but we discovered that the updates that you mentioned above has not been done. Do you know what the symptoms of not having does updates installed are?
