I am motor shopping in the 200 HP range. I've been told that the 4 strokes offer about a 30% fuel savings over the 2 strokes. Is this true? Any thoughts on the 2 stroke vs 4 stroke debate would be appreciated. thanks.....

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke vs 2 stroke

Ahoy, Capt. Mackie.

Well, it depends.

Carbureted 2 strokes get the worst fuel efficiency. They usually offer the least weight per hp and cost least.

EFI 2 strokes are a bit better than that, weigh more, cost more.

Carbureted 4 strokes are even better.

EFI 4 strokes and DFI 2 strokes get the best fuel efficiency, as much as double some carbed 2 strokes. They are the most expensive and, with some exceptions, the heaviest.

All 2 strokes use oil all the time. Four strokes only use it at oil changes. The real difference is that you can decide where the oil from the 4 stroke goes next.

Good luck. :)

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke vs 2 stroke

Hi,
If money is no problem and You want a CARB 3-star rated 200 hp outboard there is for the moment only 3 to choose I belive:

Yamaha F200 (EFI) 4-stroke
Suzuki DF200 (EFI) 4-stroke
Honda BF200 (EFI) 4-stroke

I do not think Johnson has a 200 hp 4-stroke (yet) but it would be the same as a Suzuki since all their 4-strokes up to 140 hp has been "Suzuki" so far but painted white.

Yamaha 200 HPDI and V-Max 200 HPDI is not CARB 3-star rated, only 2-star.

Mercury 200 hp (Optimax 2-stroke DFI) is CARB 2-star rated only.

Evinrude 200 hp 2-stroke (DFI) is only 2-Star rated as far as I know.

If You do not care if it is CARB 3-Star rated or not You have many 200 hp outboards to choose... difficult task to make a selection. But it is a fact that the direction for 2-strokes are DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) since that makes it possible to have the 2-strokes more environmentally friendly and possible to get them CARB 2- or 3-star rated. For example Mercury Optimax DFI 2-strokes 75-135 hp is actually CARB 3-star rated and that is great news. Hope more models and other manufatcurer follow this for their 2-strokes (for example Evinrude with the E-Tech line of 2-stroke outboards has done that).

2 Stroke......4 Stroke........Go for either at the 225 power level. Don't forget the horsepower aka the Colts will always outperform the wing and a prayer Eagles.
