I was down at the local dockside bar here in town and I heard a rumor that Yamaha is working on a 400 hp outboard. Anyone else heard this one?

No, but I heard Merc twisted 500 out of a Verado, probably just before it went SuperNova. ;)

I doubt that, but I wouldn't mind if they did ..... 500 out of a verado ... damn .... the max HP I have gotten out of a motor is my Johnson offshore racing V8 clocking close to 425hp .....

Hummmm.. I think the pros on the king fish tour would be pushing for this motor. 2-400's vs 3-250's better econ, less drag, marketed to people who have big cash even in a down market.

I'll put money on a 400hp yamaha in 6-8 months.

I put also my money on it. Just ask the local Yamaha dealer and he confirmed a 8 cilinder 4 stroke. He don't know homany horsepower it is... Between the 300 - 400 pk

Maybe the "budget" guys.
I'm starting to see more and more quads out there. I fished along side a pair of boats last weekend that had quad 250 Mercs on the back.

Re: Yamaha 400 hp 4 stroke outboard

I keep hearing roumors of a 320 HP V8 4 stroke.
I suspect now that suzuki has a 300 HP 4L v6 about ready for production release we will see yamaha and merc follow up soon.
I can see an easy 500 HP out of the current F250 with a decent exhaust and a bit more aggresive cams and some tweaking with a programable ECU.

sometimes I wish Yamaha would persure performance like Mercury has done, other times I am glad they dont.
biggest drawback I see to more HP is it sooner or later will require larger gears and that will require a lrger case which will eat up a significant amount of the power increase.
Suzuki was very innovative with a reduction gear setup just below the powerhead then feeding via a shaft to the gear case.
I think some of the Hondas have done the same in the past.

Well, ultimately one has to ask the question: How do you get all that twisting thrust (prop pushes forward, transom bracket pushes aft) coupled to the boat. In an inboard it's a no brainer as the engine is mounted in the boat and the thrust is along the length of the stringers. An outboard is just hanging off the arse. Can't imagine the groaning that the mounting bracket goes through when they hammer down on the throttles of 4-250 hp's.

Re: Yamaha 400 hp 4 stroke outboard

Supposedly they are going to build a V8 outboard based on the 4.4 L V8 they are currently making for Volvo that goes in the XC90 and the S80. This is essentially the same engine that they used in the SHO Taurus back in the 90's. From what I have read they are going to bore it out to about 4.6 L so it makes around 320 or more HP. Although I like Yamaha engineering my choice would be a Verado, gotta love the force fed outboard.

Check this out:
http://www.boats.com/content/boat-articles.jsp?contentid=19202

".....Yamaha has scheduled a media event at its booth on the show floor at 1 p.m. on Feb. 15, where I'm betting it will pull the tarp off a prototype of its forthcoming V8 outboard, which may hit the market in 2008. Without revealing any details Yamaha boasted about this project last year, saying a pair of these giant outboards would replace triple 250s on a boat like the Grady-White Express 360 (http://www.gradywhite.com/360/) , which puts it in the 350-hp range. Yamaha was testing with Intrepid in the Keys last summer, and the buzz then was that the powerhead is based on a 4.4-liter V8 block Yamaha manufactures for Ford, increased to 5.0 liters. Optional twin-prop drive would offer the blade area required to move heavy boats......."

900 plus lbs each. It's huge! The funnest part of the Yamaha show was when they couldn't get the drape off the engine, with their special super dooper removal system, to show it. Luckly they had an engineer on standby who uncovered it by hand.

According to the Miami Herald this engine was unveiled at the Miami Boat show at 350 hp. I may sneak over this week for a look see.
