Hi,,,and im brand new at this boat stuff. I have a Yamaha 40hp Engine on a 2020xl Pantoon! Numbers on the side of the Yamaha are 6E9 C40 PLRV Don't know if that helps. The motor idles poorly after driving on a fresh water lake for 1/2 hour or so. Almost impossible to start again. Im using 50-1 oil mixture & I turned the idle up a little higher with the screw for the idle. Seems to work a little better. Because I was all alone 12 miles from the house I also turned the 2 screws "One above the other" 1 turn counter clockwise...I think its either gas or air flow but like I said I was in a pinch. It seems to be running better. The engine is immaculate, so is the boat & running full throttle the engine runs like a top. I also changed the plugs. What I would like to know for now until I get a manual, is what are those screws that I turned? Gas? Air? And whats next if it reoccurs. Hook or by crook I want to learn all I can about my engine. I was also a service tech for 20 yrs on other mechanical things so I chance adjustments without knowledge from time to time. Thanks for allowing me to post here. Nice site to go to!!

hello
test the fuel pump as per the service manual. then rebuild the carbs. first order though is a spark and compression test. if you have faulty spark or compression nothing you do will ever make it run correctly.
good luck and keep posting

Those are the idle air screws you are turning. As Rodbolt said, the fuel system is the most likely suspect. On most two strokes, if you have compression and fire, then fuel is the next thing to check. To help determine the location of a fuel problem, I use a small seperate tank and line to help isolate the trouble. A Yamaha sevice manual for your motor may save many hours of headache if you wish to service your self.

Re: Yamaha 40hp Engine idle problems after warm up

Thanks guys, good tips & an excellent forum for help & tips. After what I now know to be adjustment screws for the idle I turned them both counter clockwise after I tried clockwise & adjusted the one screw for the overall idle "I guess" and ran it for about an hour. Seems it sat for a while and still had gas treatment from winterizing. All is working so maybe my guess work paid off or whatever muck was in there is out. Tomorrow I will set the adjustments back to the way they were originally and see what happens! YES a manual is in order!!!!!!!!!! No doubt. But when you have to row 12 miles,,,,,you knowwwwwwwwwwww. LOL Thx Guys
