 Hi everbody, I am considering the purchase of my first yammy! all I know is, guy that wants to sell it says it's a"93" well doing a little research of my own:D.. I found out that a 2stroke, 2cylinder wasn't produced until "95" so on that note. what else do I need to be concerned about? according to the seller its a 93 powerhead/w a 97 lower unit that is a "hightorque" I tell you this. It pumps water like a d%mn fire hose! so my question is; are these engines a good investment? are they known for bunch of issues? an bottom line is it worth 7 bills? oh an it is 16" to cavitation plate an no pwr tilt:( if anyone has some knowledge I would greatly appreciate it truely!

Hmm, if you can find the model number on the transom bracket then you can verify the year, if it ends with an "R" it is indeed a '93, a '95 will end with a "T" and the following models are all 1993 year 2-cylinder 40hp 2-strokes, according to the actual parts look-up from the yamaha site...C40ELRR, C40MSHR, C40PLRR.
The "high torque" gear case is not something I really know much about, other than they've offered high torque or high thrust cases on some of their smaller motors for quite some time now. Popular on pontoon boats and for commercial use.

Hope this helps some. Do a compression check and maybe see if you can have a yamaha mechanic check it out?

nothing that you spend hard earned money on for a boat is a good investment, that is why they are called a hole in the water that you throw money into.

Post the model # from mounting bracket

High torque motors are geared lower and they are not for the normal boat

As stated boats are very high maintenance and money pits. Long as you take care of it and compression is fine you should be good. I'd recommend water testing it not just using ear muffs as I call them ;-) Yamaha and Mercury (NOT FORCE) most say are some of the best outboard engines you can buy.
