Can anyone help a boating newbee? Neighbor upgraded so I bought the 14 ft martime skiff with Yamaha 40. took lower end off to get cotter pin I dropped in prop area. When I put the lower end back on it didn't have reverse. Any Ideas?:(

There is a Yamaha section you'll get better quicker response there.
if the impeller hadn't been done recently you should do it while your messing with the leg.
When you get on the water get back to us with the information in "Read this first"at the top of the prop forum.
and we'll get you setup if you need a prop up date.

Great Thanks! Found that and re posted - Supposedly (if that's a word) neighbor did prop analysis and best I can get is 23 MPH on a 14ft Maritime Skiff. maybe back though!

Drop lower unit, wrap a rag(to protect it) around splined shifter shaft, then grab it with some Vice-Grips, and while slowly turning prop shaft, shift back and forth until you find neutral, then put motor control/shifter in neutral position, then bolt lower unit back up...you should be fine then! Good Luck!:)

Re: Yamaha 40TLRU - Removed Lower end lost reverse now

I dropped lower end again last night (multiple times), and tried with shifter on the console in every position (forward, netural and reverse) and I rotated the shifter in each position(full counter clock, full clockwise and even half way) each time I put lower end back on, when I started the prop would always be turning (clockwise). The shifter on console has to be in nuetral to start engine, but when starts, prop is always turning. I did notice distinctive clicks when I rotated shifter spline, but when I turned the prop clockwise the drive shaft always turned counter clockwise, I could not get the prop to spinn freely

So started thinking, that maybe I did have reverse when I went out the other day and something broke while out? And it wasn't me taking off the lower end that did something?

Ok final got it to go. Spoke with Tech at local shop, and said to push throttle all the way up, rotate shifter on lower end clockwise mate lower and upper , heard a clink, and tech was right you'll know when the prop rotates clockwise. It worked. Now just have to figure why I'm losing RPM after a minute or too of running high RPM on the water. On land RPM stay's up fine.

motor needs more fuel running under load, check fuel pressure/ vacuum, then clean carbs and adjust like service manual calls for
