Yamaha 50..deal or not?

I just acquired a Yamaha 50 motor that has one piston frozen up. No cracks just needs a piston although I plan on replacing all three since I have to get into the block. My question is what year is it so I can get parts, sn50ELRP) and was $300 a good deal or not? Other than the one piston, it looks great and not abused. Thanks!

That's borderline. It will cost you over 1300 buks to have the powerhead rebuilt, but if you got the time,tools,patience, and book, it would make a great project next winter.<br />And you can probably buy what you need for less than 500 and your time.<br />You will also need to determine what happened to the piston to freeze it up,and fix that at the same time.

Ya, I called the dealer and I priced it all out from the pistons,pins,rings,ect. and it will cost about $400 to rebuild it but at least I will know what I have. As far as having it done by a shop is out of the question! I'll pay myself $85 bucks an hour and enjoy it at the same time...can I bill my wife for my labor and tell her what a good deal I got? I'm still searching for the year though.

I rebuilt a Yamaha 40hp last year, it wasn't very bad at all, and it cost me $ 435 in parts.<br />Only one suggestion from my experience.<br />When you pull flywheel use an air impact wrench to loosen main nut. I did the DUMB thing of holding it with screwdriver trying to loosen nut, and I broke off the plate that support charging coil and ignition ctato underneath flywheel.....You won't believe how much that part did cost....1,275.00 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found a used one and said thank you prayers for a week.<br /><br />Remember, a $ 55.00 impact wrench is WELL worth the expense, get one.<br /><br />Val

Well I haven't broken it down yet, but from the head cover being taken off it looks like the middle piston had detonation (lots of pitting from heat) and a small chip in it as well. I will check out the oil pump and the cooling system to try to figure it out. Does anyone have info on what year this thing is? SN: 50ELRP. Thanks!

I can't seem to find out where I seen how to figure out how the exact model, year, and features according to the number. This is the best guess by what I remember. I think the P would represent the year. I just purchased a 25MHSA and the I think the A represents 2002 so I think the P in (50ELRP) yours would represent 1992. How I come up with the P is because there are 10 letters between P and A. I'm not totally sure but thats what my guess is. If I find out more I will let you know.

To tell the age of an evinrude look at the model and serial numbers<br />I found this on the web... its the rule for telling the age of an Evinrude. Does anyone know of a rule for telling the age of a yammi?<br /><br />Example; E35ELENS Mod. no.<br />The E says its an Evirude<br />35 says it's a 35 H.P.<br />the next E says its an electric start<br />the L says its a long shaft<br />the next two letters tell the year<br />I N T R O D U C E S<br />1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0<br />so EN says it's a 1992<br />The last letter is an OEM designation that you usually don't have to worry about.

Something else to check as to the initial cause of the failure..Check for ANY carbon buildup underneath the rings. It would have burnt off to ash on the grenaded piston,but the other pistons will have a story to tell.

The first numbers are the engine hp. <br />The last letter corresponds to the year listed in the chart below. <br />1984(N)1985(K) 1986(J) 1987(H) 1988(G) 1989(F)<br />1990(D) 1991(P) 1992(Q) 1993(R) 1994(S) 1995(T)<br />1996(U) 1997(V) 1998(W) 1999(X) 2000(Y) 2001(Z)<br /><br />If your model number is 115TRR your engine is a 1993 115hp engine.

Ok Fellers. Thanks for the model/year info...seems the omc rule doesn't work but it's close! Anyway I broke down the engine yesterday and the only thing wrong that I found was a little water in the oil tank when I drained it to remove it from the block. The crank looks great and is well within the specs in my Clymers book. The cylnder wall weren't scored or mared so I think a light honing or even wet sanding will do. No carbon at all...anywhere which was strange to me for a 91 and the top and bottom pistons were fine. The reeds were good except for a little corrosion (not on the reed itself but the little plates in front of the reeds). I still plan on replacing all the pistons and rings and should have it back together by the weekend. I'm still bogled in what stopped the center piston unless it got a shot of that water. I think the water came from rain or something cause the oil cap was loose when I removed it...only a guess. Well thanks for the info and I'll keep you posted on the rebuild. Thanks again!

The evinrude model and serial number rule doesn't work for mine. the model number is 35653G and the serial number is E0003364. It is supposed to be a 1976 35hp elec st. But what is really has been is trouble.
