Hi everyone. I have a yamaha 50 Hp on the back of a macgregor 26. We have great fun with it, but unless we charge the battery up everytime before use, it never starts. This is no problem for now because i only ever do 3-4 hour trips. However it is a constant worry to me as i fear that it may not start one of these days whilst out of harbour. Also i am restricted from going out on over night trips and anchoring because i know the battery will be dead by then. I know this is more of a battery question than anything. However, i was wondering if it were possible to hand start my engine using the separate pull cord? I have tried a few times with no success. Also, what might be the best battery to buy for such an engine becuase i have been told my battery simply is too small. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much

Re: Yamaha 50Hp Starting issue

have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free. sounds like you either have some equipment draining the battery. or have a dead cell in the battery. to check for an equipment drain, disconnect the negative cable, with a small 12v test light touch cable and the neg battery terminal. best done in the dark, if the test light glows even dimly, you have something draining the battery. start pulling fuses, and retesting. till you find whats draining the battery. i use a 1150 CCA group 27 starting battery, it's large, but i like having the extra, and only about $20.00 more. i like Trojan batteries myself.

Thank you very much. I bet you're right that something is draining the battery. I'll have a go to figure out what. Thank you very much indeed. I might look into getting a similar battery to yours as well, just to be on the safe side.
Cheers
