Yamaha 85hp trim pump removal

I have a 1995 85hp yamaha with failed trim pump. By failed I mean the housing has rusted through allowing water intrusion inside the trim motor. The symptons consist of a simple clicking under the cowling when the trim button is pushed. I located the pressure release screw thanks to another post and have the motor up on the locks. I was looking at what it would take to remove the motor and it appears to be 3 bolts with probably a 10mm size head or so. The bolts are set in a triangle pattern with the 3rd bolt nestled into the corner of the port bracket. I do not see how it is possible to remove that bolt . Does anyone have any helpful hints or knowledge on how to go about tackling this problem? Thanks.

The 3rd bolt is on the transom side and the only way to get at it (assuming you are have typical tools) is to loosen the port side of the motor and angle the motor off the transom to get access. The starboard side bolts will need to be loosened a bit so the engine can be angled.

An easier method is to remove the motor but you will need a tree or lift to support the engine and a lifting eye.

Is this clear?

I was afraid of that. Basically back off on all of the engine mount bolts so as to pull the engine away from the transom to allow for access the trim pump bolt.

Are there any other difficult issues with that job aside from the bolt that can't be reached without removing the engine. Is it fairly straight forward to put the trim motor in place?

I think stubborn bolts will be it.

In case you don't have a shop manual, you can see the diagram for the trim/tilt assembly by going to:

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/parts/home.aspx

Select
1. Outboard
2. 1995 Outboard
3. C85TLRT

On the left side of the frame, select trim and tilt. The diagram is at the top and the parts list is in a separate frame below. There are zoom controls to get in closer. You can also copy the image to your computer for reference.

For frozen bolts I am a fan of PB Blaster or Kroil penetrants for breaking them free. Spray, let sit overnight, repeat spray. If really stubborn, it may take heat to get it free.

Hope this helps.
