I bought a 2007 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust for my sailboat. Had to have boat electricians re-wire the battery cables because of length and to get right sized wires (old wires were too small). Today, started motor up, took boat out for about 30 minutes, came back in and motor stalled. Couldn't get the motor to turn over again. No start AT ALL. Thought maybe we'd blown the new fuse (just installed), but fuse is fine and there's electric current to the motor contacts.
The shift cable had been a little tight, but went into neutral and reverse and forward fine for the first 30 minutes. Had to put it into reverse quickly due to a miscalculation in coming into the slip, but it went into forward fine and was in forward when the motor just stopped.Motor has a sticker on the handle that says clearly that it won't start unless it's in neutral. Does this sound like a shift cable break? Not sure why it stopped in the first place, but after it did, no sound at all when you press the start button.
I just spent a lot of money on the new -ish motor, getting the electrical done right and now, nothing from the motor at all. I hadn't run the motor much but when I tried it at the seller's it shifted fine. It shifted a little stickier than our old motor but I didn't have to ram it into place or anything. I really, really need some advice on this regarding whether I can trouble shoot it at all. Getting the motor off, to a service person, and back on has proven to be difficult because of the weight of the thing. I just don't have the upper body strength to pull it off easily.
So, is there anything I can do or check other than making sure there's current at the connection (Yes), trying to shift the lever into many various spots to see if there's a neutral point that I'm missing. Is it possible to easily bypass the neutral switch just to diagnose?
The motor seems to be in great condition. Or did. Oil changed regularly, strong water pump action, clean. Very little use according to seller who seemed legit and had a spotless garage, other boats and motors and just seemed on the up and up.
