i have a 2001 9.9 4-stroke yamaha carbuerated motor that is extremely hard starting and after running an hour or so wants to stall out(and usually does). this motor has at the most 8-10 hrs on it. if i spray starting fluid in it , it will start, but again after trolling for a while it will stall out. without the starting fluid it will sputter and start but not for long. any suggestions?...Thanks in advance. captn-tin

Re: yamaha 9.9 starting and running problems

if motors with carbs are not run for long periods of time(as little as couple of month with today's inferior gas) the carbs will have gunk, scale, etc
buildup in them....have the carb cleaned if you don't know how to fully take apart and soak(i suspect you don't)....this should cost no more than a
hundred dollars at a dealer(rebuild kit if needed will be 30 dollars or so more). Almost can say for certain this is your problem.....run your motor for
twenty minutes every month and won't happen. Also make sure bulb isn't 'soft' when squeezed....if so replace.

Agree with yamatech, probably need a good carb cleaning. I stay away from starting fuild - very combustable & due to to it's low flash point preignition could occur and cause damage - better to use gas in an industrial spay bottle - same effect & safer. Good luck.
