I have always been an OMC guy but am intrigued with the 3 cylinder, Yamaha 90hp 2-Stroke. Any comments that anyone would care to offer in regard to reliability, fuel consumption, etc. will be appreciated. Also, I understand that this motor has oil injection ... has anyone disabled it to operate on premix?

The early ones disintegrated like the old crossflows. The more recent ones (05-) have been great. Miserly on fuel, one even less than the 70 Evinrude it replaced on a 17' Aquasport. Don't disconnect the O/I. It's reliable, plus needs the oil to lube the gears.

I have a 2005 Yamaha 90hp motor on my 20' duck boat.
Quick & easy to start even in single digit temps. OK on gas, not great since it is a carbed motor.

Two thumbs up

Yamaha has the best oil injection system out there...do yourself a favor and leave it hooked up

Re: Yamaha 90hp 2-Stroke

Thanks for the responses. If I buy one I'll leave the "oiler" alone. I really like the idea of an inline 3 cylinder as a 90 hp. My Johnson 65 is a great motor but those few extra horses would be nice and I wouldn't have to move the kicker off of the transom, as I would with a V-4. Only problem is that I would have to go find a kicker that doesn't use premix fuel! If only Briggs & Straton would make their air cooled 4-strokes salt water compatible!

THe blocker plate is all you need to do.My old 115merc I looped the oil hose just to circulate around the pump and It ran for years like that. The lower unit blew but he motor didnt.

Re: Yamaha 90hp 2-Stroke

I have an 89 and I love it. I kept the vro in place but know several guys that removed it and had no issues. As far as gears go I do not know of any gears that use the 2stroke oil for lubercation. The only issue I have had is that my warning buzzer went off at about 4800 RPM yesterday. I shut it down and let it sit for a bit and ran it home without an issue. I ran it below 3000 on the way home and it seem to be ok. I'm still not sure what caused the buzzer but have not had any time to run any tests.
