I was just quoted by a shop for 16 hours to rebuild 6 yamaha 250 carbs. The motor is a 96. This sounds like quite a bit more time than it should. What do you guys think? I know on cars there are publications that list the amount of time it takes to do certain jobs like timing belts, but what about for marine engines? Any help would be appreciated as I really cant afford to get ripped off.

In that case, it'd be cheaper to buy new ones. Shouldn't take more than a couple hours for most respectable shops.

I have a 115 yamaha two stroke and it has two carbs, I recently had them rebuilt and the total time charged was 2 hours labour plus parts which came to a little over $300

Re: Yamaha Carb Rebuild

250 hp 1996 model Yamaha's are six cylinder motors with 3 carbs--not 6 carbs. Do you have dual motors?

I can pull the two carbs on my 1985 Yamaha 115 hp, disassemble, clean and reassemble both in 1 hour tops. As long as you're careful, the gaskets can usually be reused and no carb kit is required on most 2 stroke rebuilds. You've just got to note how many "turns" any adjustments are at--and reset them to the same "turns."

And, I'm not a real mechanic and not very fast. A real mechanic might could clean a carb in 5 minutes after it's on the bench.

Best investment ever: A repair manual.

Best advice: Find another mechanic.

Re: Yamaha Carb Rebuild

I just had my S150 carbs rebuilt and charged 3 hrs labor plus parts. It shouldn't take a tech more than 1 hr per carb set I was told. My engine has two carbs together so my 6 cyl has 3 carb banks. I'd find another shop fast!
