I want to know how are the quality of these engines, asking cause im looking to buy my first boat and i seen many boats Forsale online and locally with Yamahas in it and many are not working with problems. Also most of then look like new from outside made in year 2000-2002 ect...... also in newspaper i see once in a while yamahas being sold with blowup powerhead or whatever in nonworking conditions.

generally are they made cheap quality? not to offend anyone just asking.

few month back i saw locally forsale a 21'Mako year around mid80's with a Yamaha200hp year 2000's up for $3000. and i regret now not having the money in that time. but i was saying to myself why is this boat so cheap and it has a yamaha that looked like new, also with a alum trailer 4wheel

Re: yamaha Engs quality question

Yamaha engines are regarded by most people as the best, most reliable outboard engines sold in the US. I have had Yamaha engines for the past 20 years. I also have a 70 hp Evinrude that has been used by me for at least 10 years with no major problems. Having said that, I am thinking of re-powering my boat and I am seriously considering an Evinrude ETEC.

I have 3 month old 2007 F20 and I am not happy. It's knocking at 5500 rpm.
and no one knows why. So called qualified Yamaha mechanic (120 miles trip)told me to run it hard for another 7 hrs. hard so if it brakes he will know why. Well...
Another Yamaha qualified mechanic wanted to run it in water tank with regular prop (he doesn't have a test prop with holes) and get it to 5500 rpm. I called Yamaha Customer Service and they told him stop the test-there is no way motor could reach 5500 rpm in water tank with regular prop in stationary position. There are no more Yamaha dealers in my area. Very poor service and untrained field service! Yamaha told me that they can't control dealers so it is between you and your dealer.
I consider Honda.

Re: yamaha Engs quality question

yamahas are very simple to work on. I am amazed they pay me so well to do it.
however you must have the correct tools and service literature or you will struggle and blame the product.
kinda like the poor one above whineing cause he has a sorry dealer.
we see it all the time, monkeys for techs and a dealership that wont purchase test equipment.
then both the customer and the dealership are not happy.
but a call to the yamaha consumer line may aide in finding a dealer with possibly a master tech and test equipment.
there is a website that lists dealers with master techs and the test wheel is not very expensive, plus its a tax write off.
but overall after almost 30 years of twisting wrenches I have found Yamaha to be about the best in both product and warrenty relations.
btw, I am or have been in the past, certified on Tohatsu,Suzuki,merc/mariner,Force ,Volvo penta Mercrusier and Yamaha.most my work was J/E for years but I never made it to OMC.

Re: yamaha Engs quality question

Rodbolt,
I have to admit that Yamaha Customer Service is the best I have ever talked to on any product. However, they don?t supervise people who represent Yamaha business. They don?t ever require having a test prop for diagnostics in water tank at max rpms.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, I am having my 2007 F20 knocking, and no local dealer can help. I wish I could go to FL but I can?t.

Rodbolt, would you please advice on possible problem with my F20. It runs well up to 5000 rpm (I have Yamaha, ENG-METER-4C-02 rpm meter), and than starts knocking once or twice per second. Knocking frequency increases with rpm, and decreases when rpm is reduced. It disappears below 5000 rpm. No knocking at neutral at any rpm. Because of knocking, I would never get throttle to its max. Yamaha Customer Service told me that there should be no knocking when Overrev protection is engaged. Overrev will simply reduce rpms down to 2000. Maybe knocking is a part of Overrev protection. There is no note on Overrev in user manual at all. It does not even mentions its existence.

I have replace 14 pitch prop for 8 pitch (the smallest pitch fro f20) to reduce the load to engine and achieve max. rpm. I have also done 10hr service last week. Knocking is coming from upper unit. What should I do? Please help. Do you know people which have 2007, f20? Do they have the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Re: yamaha Engs quality question

about the F20, lets try to start a new thread. knocking above 5000 RPM is definately not normal. the rev limiter will simply cause the engine ign system to misfire above about 6200 RPM and can be easily found with a DVA meter monitoring the ign coil primary voltage, if voltage is stable it aint the rev limiter.
dont confuse the rev limiter with the speed reduction at overtemp or low oil pressure.

but without hearing the knock its hard to say if its piston/piston pin. piston slap or valvetrain noise.

look at the yamaha website
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/training/toptechnician.aspx
this may help locate someone with some training anyway.

me I know they make the F20 and its been redesigned for the 07 production run. however 95% of what I see is twins of 150 and up.
we dont see many small motors in this area.
but no the knock is not a normal running feature.
keep it documented as to who and when you talked with both at the dealership and yamaha customer relations. you may find its handy as if it does fail outside its warrenty period due to something that had been complained about inside the warrenty period I have never ever seen yamaha fail to honor it.
unlike ford motor company on my lemon 06 ranger.but thats another thread :).
