I'll preface this by saying I'm not a mechanic or an experienced boat owner. Please explain things as if I were 5 years old :)

We have a 2002 Yamaha F115TLRB with about 500 hours. Engine is on a 19ft Campion Explorer. Our home is boat-only access (salt water), so the boat gets used regularly. I use only premium fuel (no ethanol). No boat = no supplies (water, food, etc.).

I've noticed an issue get progressively worse and am hoping to get it solved. What was happening about a month ago is the engine would abruptly cut-out for a split second then resume power again. This would happen randomly -- coming up to plane, cruising, etc. The power cut-out is "instant" -- no engine fluttering or burbling -- more like a light switch being flicked off then on again. Weird thing is it would not do it for weeks, then rear its head 3 days in a row, then nothing again for weeks.

I've checked the kill switch lanyard to make sure it's ok and even tried a spare we had on hand.

This last week the problem has become worse. Now when the power cut-off happens, then engine completely dies and must be restarted (starts up just fine). Yesterday, it cut-out 3 times before we got to shore (about 2 miles). Today I took the boat out for a test and nothing *sigh*.

We live in a somewhat remote area, and the boat is always in the water, so doing maintenance is a big pain in the butt for me. Twice a year we use a local Powersports shop to do basics like engine and gear oil changes, zinc anode replacement, fuel filter, spark plugs. etc. Having said that, I don't get the feeling they are staffed with Yamaha master techs, but it's all we've got. I'm reluctant to just hand the boat over to them "blind" because if they don't get it sorted the same day it means we need to find a hotel to spend the night.

Any ideas as to what could be the issue?

NOTE: About the time this started happening, I noticed the trim gauge stopped working (always shows full up) and would intermittently not work. No idea if this is related or not.

Since you said you're not a mechanic and don't know much about these things, you may be better off taking it to someone. It can be plugged into a computer and they may be able to see what the issue is, but a loose or frayed wire may not show up.

These motors also have a corrosion issue located in the exhaust housing, there's a bolt made from mild steel that when it rusts away can cause running issues.
