Hi Folks

I wonder if someone can help as I am completely stumped? I have a 2006 F15AE at the end of last year it wouldn't idle properly so I took the carb off and it was full of salt, I cleaned it totally and fitted a new carb kit for good measure put the carb back on and it ran pretty well until I hit the throttle hard then it would die, if it was gently increased it seemed ok until it came to put it in neutral then it died. So I stripped the fuel pump and it was full of salt so a new pump kit and a good clean and it's was good as new, however still didn't fix the problem. I checked the spark with an old plug with the gap opened right up and it jumped the gap yet didn't seems very strong (if that makes sense). I eventually gave up and put it into a main dealer who has taken the best part of ?150 off me to put the carb in an ultrasonic bath. I took it out to the Loch a couple of days ago and it ran for half an hour then died when it came off plane and wouldn't restart. I put the warm up leaver right up and eventually got it started bumped it into gear and limped into the dock. I am being told this needs a new carb but I am not totally convinced this isn't electrical.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

You might have a dying ignition coil from the sound of it. Best way to test would be to get it warm by running it, then pull the plug wire and put a spark tester on it and connect the other end to ground adjusted to the gap of the engine and have someone turn it over. There should be a solid blue spark, orange or yellow can be a sign of a weak ignition coil. Some coils will lose spark completely when warm. The spark tester shouldn't be more than $10 and is a cheap valuable tool to have. Cheap insurance before you buy a new carburetor.

I would wonder where all of this salt came from that you found in your carb and fuel pump.
drain and clean the tank, lines, primer bulb, etc or just replace them.
clean a carb and then dump a bunch of trash from junk fuel or fuel lines into it and you get to clean it over and over again.
The ignition system can be tested as the service manual says, if you want to rule that out
peak voltage reading voltmeter is needed, but will tell you if the minimum voltage is being produced
