Yamaha F30 no spark

Hi,<br /><br />I have a 2000 (UK spec) F30 outboard with no spark at any of the cylinders. I have been trying to find a manual for it but there doesn't seem to be one available in the UK.<br /><br />Can anyone help me try to diagnose the problem?<br /><br />I have checked the kill switch and presume the fault lies with the CDI or the generator.<br /><br />Any help would be much appreciated.<br /><br />Cheers Kenny

look on the CDI and tell me the name of the manufacurer. maybe I can help some. but first I have to try to figgue out what ign system it has. sometimes the US motors are different than the rest of the world

ok<br /> thats a merc motor in disguise. has the same failures merc always had .check the charge coils, a peak reading multimeter would be best but resistance tests are second best, the charge coil resistance is g/w-w/g 660 ohms with a cranking peak V 193 volts loaded. the power coil y/b-y/b should read about 7 ohms with an unloaded peak of about 7v cranking. the pulser coilr/w-b is anbout 300 ohns with 6 volts peak loaded cranking. also trace the kill circuit to the CDI and test it. you may have a kill switch failure.

Thanks again for the help Rodbolt,<br /><br />I’ve tried to follow your instructions but I’m afraid because of my lack of knowledge I’m not sure of some of the Terminology.<br /><br />CHARGE COIL: <br /><br />I have measured the resistance of the G/W – W/G wires coming from the stator under the flywheel at 666 ohms.<br />This model is manual start so I cranked her with a powerful electric drill on the flywheel nut and the plugs removed to reduce compression. I’m not sure what you meant by loaded so I measured voltage with the wires still connected and got a peak of 240V which then fell away to a constant 5V. I also measured with the wires disconnected and got a peak of 220V which then fell away to a constant 43V.<br /><br />POWER COIL:<br /><br />I measured the resistance of the Y/B –Y/B wires from the stator as 7 ohms<br />Peak voltage connected was about 2.3V and 3V disconnected but this varied depending on the speed of the cranking.<br /><br />PULSER COIL:<br /><br />I’m not sure what the pulser coil is? There are R/W- B wires coming from the CDI and going to a small sealed box about 1”x1”x0.5” with “67C-00 073” on it. There are also R/W – B coming out of the box and going to some kind a sensor which is pointing at the flywheel.<br />The sensor’s resistance was difficult to measure because it started at about 40Kohms and slowly increased to about 160Kohms while I was measuring it? When disconnected it only produced 0.1V.<br /><br />Sorry about my poor description. I hope you can make some sense of it.<br /><br />Thanks again, Kenny

sounds like the pulser failed. thats the sensor looking thing by the flywheel. also known as a trigger coil on some motors. the reaswon for the charge coil volts being funny is cause when the condensers charge in the CDI but dont discharge, voltage falls off. when you see a funny reading like that its telling you its charging but not discharging. loaded meaans with the components hooked up. unloaded means with the wires dissconected. test the pulser coil leads from each lead to ground as well. but with 160K its way out of spec. even at 40 K its still way above the 20% tolerence if the spec is 300 Ohms.

Rodbolt,<br /><br />Just had another look at the pulser coil, cut the plug off to check the wires. They are both brittle and black inside. Looks like it's definately my problem.<br /><br />I'll order an new one and let you know how I get on.<br /><br />Thanks again for your help.<br /><br />Kenny

Hello again,<br /><br />Just got the new pulser coil in the post and was delighted to see I now have spark.<br /><br />Unfortunatly I only have spark on 1 and 3, nothing at all on 2. I tried swapping the coil, plug lead and spark plug but it made no difference. Continuity on the wires from the coil to the cdi are good and there are no earth leaks.<br /><br />Can any one point me in the right direction? Please?<br /><br />While looking at the wiring I noticed a black cylinder about 1" long and 1/2" diameter with two grey wires coming out of it. It's connected to an orange wire which is common to all 3 ignition coils and a black wire. Both wires where badly corroded and broke off when I was inspecting it. I don't see it on the parts diagrams. Could it be my problem?<br /><br />Thanks in advance, Kenny

Just to let you know I had the engine running last night. The problem with the spark on number 2 was a corroded wire going to the ignition coil.<br /><br />Thanks again for the help.<br /><br />Cheers Kenny

Hi,<br /><br />I'm looking for some advice on this engine again. Looks like the lack of spark at number 2 cyl has returned.<br /><br />I've tried swapping coils with out success. I would be very gratefull if someone could advise on how to diagnose the problem. I presume the stator does not distinguish between the cylinders? So the problem must with the CDI unit or downstream from there?<br /><br />Any help would be much appriciated.<br /><br />Cheers Kenny
