Yamaha F60TLRH 2009 Model - Doesn’t Start on 1st Turn of Ignition

My Yamaha F60 on a 820 Sunchaser Pontoon Boat has relatively low hours and it runs beautifully but it doesn’t start on the first or even second turn of the ignition but almost always fire on the third turn. It just doesn’t seem like it is getting fuel.

This isn’t critical but somewhat annoying especially as my cottage neighbour’s Suzuki jumps to life on the first key turn.

I spoke to our Marina Mechanic who looks after the engine and he said it is a sealed unit but suggested I post to see what others have to say. He did advise me to turn the key twice but not fully to fire the starter but this doesn’t seem to help.

how long have you owned this motor?
has it ever started faster than 3 key on cycles?
where are you located in the world?
I do not see a 2009 F60TLRH listed here in the USA

I have owned this for 5 years and am located on Lake Talon, near North Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Since I purchased the boat and motor I had an issue where the engine started but went into high rpms which I cured by turning off the engine and then restarted it immediately and the engine then ran properly and I continued doing this until I did some research and found that a faulty IAC/ISC was likely the problem.
Our Marina Mechanic replaced the Idle Air Control Valve just prior to launching a week ago and that has corrected the high revving starting issue.
So in summary, although I have owned the F60 for 5 years I never really had it starting “normally”.
There are several Yamaha F50 moored close by so I will check with them as to how their engine starts.
The engine runs beautifully otherwise.
I do have a pirate copy of the Yamaha Diagnostic Software so I will likely hook that up and see what is reported.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

from what I have read about injected 4 stroke motors, the IAC resets to 100% when you turn off the motor so it will be ready for the next start up.
when started it will be at high idle until the ECU tells the IAC to slow RPMs to normal idle speed

maybe your IAC was sticking and not closing back when asked to.
strange that the next key on cycle it would do what is should.

did you motor take several start tries back then also?
or is this something new now that the IAC was changed?

Have you tried pumping the primer bulb before starting to make sure the VST is full of fuel ?

I never pump the primer bulb on the fuel tank hose at the rear of the boat.

I just read up on the function of the Vapor Separator Tank and I am suspecting as you suggest that it is not initially full of fuel.

This is likely why the Mechanic suggested I turn the key partially a couple of times so as to activate the fuel pump to fill the VST.

Ever since I purchased the boat and engine there was the IAC issue so now that that is fixed I was hoping for a no nonsense start on the first turn of the key.

I will go down to the dock and fire it up after squeezing the primer bulb on the fuel line next to the 10 gallon tank and report back.

I had thoughts in the past that the lift pump comes on when key is turned to the on position on these motors, but I was told different.
Just the pump inside the Vst comes on pressurizing the rail.
the lift pump only runs when the motor is running.
I have no idea what motors that is true on, but it never hurts to hit the primer bulb to see if that helps.
you should be able to tell if you have to pump some times before the bulb gets hard, that would indicate the VST was not full

I squeezed the primer bulb several times but it was definitely full of fuel.

Cold start after running it yesterday and it did not start on the first turn of the ignition but did fire on the second turn but barely but I can live with that.

I will check with a couple of other owners of the very similar F50’s and see what their cold starting experience is like.
