I have mounted a 1998 s150txrw on my 19' Calais. On a pod. It is replaceing a 1990 200 etxd. I had bought the required connectors to work with this year of engine. Things have gone ok untill one day I started looseing my Tac. ( Yamaha lcd ). Just faded in and out till gone. A couple days later I lost oil transfer. Went into the harness and found the usual corrosion and a bad wire.

I have repaired the harness with marine connectors ect. Starts up no problem but I never got the Tac back. I found that when I unhooked the trim sensor connector I got my Tac back? Does that make sense to anyone?

I am going to look harder at the wireing diagram but any suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

keep hunting for loose or corroded connections.
the 98 uses a 3 wire trim sender the orange wire is a 5 volt reference coming from the tach.

Thanks Rodbolt. I will check again. I dont understand the relationship of when the trim sensor is connected I loose the Tach. I thought I must be shorting out something.
Thanks again.

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

if you suspect a short look for smoke.
myself I suspect an open or severly correded connection someplace that wont allow current to flow.
remember voltage is simply a matter of electromotive force but does not flow, current flows.
most likly the electrical load with the trim sender hooked up exceeds the ability of a connectiion to flow current and the whole thing quits.

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

I got into the main engine harness and found several splices. This harness has been done before as several splices in one wire itself. Found red to 10 pin connector corroded under insulation ( all powder) . One splice right beside factory connector! Have 12 volts to that now. But only getting 3 volts out of the orange. I will look more this week end. I will order a new harness for the engine as it was done very poorly previously ( Butcher'd) and I wont be able to trust it offshore.

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

Hey Rodbolt. I have checked more wireing and the main engine harness seems fine now. However the tach is another issue still. I have a solid 12v on the yellow wire going into the tach. Only have 31/2 to 4 volts comming out on the orange. ( no load ) Any more suggestions?

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

I have installed a new engine harness and it every thing seems ok untill I hook up that trim sensor still. I checked that the Tach itself was giving the 5 volt reference on the orange but was actually around 4 volts. 12 v in.

Do I suspect and search the wireing from the motor to the gauge or should I suspect the trim sensor? I have read in a previous post that all oil safety indicators flashing could be a faulty sensor. This used to happen to me prior aswell?

Maybe buying a used motor was not such a good Idea . I have a few issues with it but want to deal with them one at a time. :(

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha instrument problem.

The last wireing problem came from corrosion by the relays feeding the main wireing harness. Thanks for your help with this Rodbolt. Now onto the next problem.
