I am getting a new boat motor for graduation in two weeks. So far all I know is that I want it to be a 40 HP model. Most likely it will only be a two cycle model. Should I get a yamaha or a mercury? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Well between yamaha and mercury...which would be more durable and last me longer. I think the prices are about the same as far as I know.

my opinion is the two cycle yam is a walkaway winner over a merc. in a 4 stroke there is not much differnce
have not heard much from the e-tec but what little I have is good.

Are you looking at 2 cycle for cost reasons?

I had a 50 merc 2 stroke for a year and a half-- and hated it! I traded it for an e-tec and really like the new motor.

If you have to choose netween Yami and Merc 2 strokes, go Yami. But I'd seriously recommend looking at a 4 stroke or fuel injected 2 stroke.

Good luck. I wish I had gotten a boat and motor for graduation!

Trout

Considering just 50Hp 2-stroke motors, Yamaha or Merc ... It's a draw in my mind. Both are the best they'll ever be. I'd be suprised to see them offered in 2006. A 4-stroke would be a better investment. But if it's a first boat, cheaper may be wiser. ;)

I read somewhere that Yamaha makes everything but the lower unit on a Mercury. Thoughts?

Not the 2-strokes. Yamaha makes many components for the 4-stroke Mercs. Should be interesting to see what Merc does once they can't get any more.

Brian you can't go wrong with ether one. I prefer the Yamaha to merc. Go with the one with the closest dealer to where you live. That way if you have to have work done you won’t have to drive a log distance to drop of and pick up you OB. Or you may be lucky enough to have a Yamaha and a Merc dealer in your town. Take a look at the Evinrude e-tec. :)

I agree with all of the above. Dealer service should dictate your decision when it finally comes down to it. A good dealer will make or break your ownership experience when the going gets tough. Both outboards are great. Of the two, I tend to lean towards the Yamaha, but you will be happy with either one. Both are time tested designs with a good history.

ignore both of them and get an evinrude E-TEC. more power, less gas, light weight.

best thing since sliced bread :)
