Yamaha outboard question

New here, but have a question to ask.
I am putting running lights on my boat, it has a 2004 50 hp yamaha 2 stroke.
The lights are 130 watt lights, I am mounting 2 lights.
Now I plan on adding another battery to my boat, a perko switch to help charge both batteries.
But will runing the lights cause my selinoid to burn up from charginging to much. I think my motorsalternator has a 6 amp on it, I usually only run the lights for about 45 min. max in the dark for hunting. Will this create a problem with my motor?
Just learning about the boat and motor thing.
Thanks for any info

Re: Yamaha outboard question

260 watts divided by 12 volts equals 21.6 amps. Your engine charging system is not going to keep up.

Bad idea and besides, the solenoid engages the starter and has nothing to do with the charging system. Just because an engine has an alternator or generator does not mean you can hang an unlimited amount of accessories on it and expect it to keep up with demand. Just with the lights you are using several times more power than the alternator is capable of providing at wide open throttle. Even with one light you would not stay even.

130 watts?
are you running Q beam running lights?
most running lights are 3 to 7 watts.
the math is easy to do for electrical load calculation just give yourself a 20% margin.

I was thinking the same thing.

Are they "Pick up the Deek's" spot lights or running lights?

2 batteries should have no problem running 230 watts for 45 minutes, if the run time is long enough to recharge the batteries. It won't hurt your engine because you are drawing the batteries down, it will still charge the batteries @ 6 amps (or what ever it is)

I used to run both front and rear running lights no problem, just off the lighting coil on my non electric, without a battery DT 30. but that was that was 2, 5-7 watt bulbs.

Re: Yamaha outboard question

I am wanting to run 2 off road lights. I am going to use the lights for running the river in the dark, maybe 45 min max. I will have 2 batteries, the lights will be hooked up to the 2nd battery, not the main battery, but I was going to use a perko switch only to help charge the 2nd battery, you can switch to either battery or both at the same time to charge them. I hunt the river alot, and wanted something to put out some good light to where I can really see good. so this is what I have come up with. I can switch over to the other battery, but switch it to the main battery that starts the motor etc.. But the 2 lights will only be on the 2nd battery., so I would not switch the switch to both batteries untill I am heading back to the boat ramp, with the lights off, so it would charge both batteries, but not having the lights pull from the 2nd battery.

Re: Yamaha outboard question

You should get 45 minutes out of a decent deep cycle, but you may have to charge it on shore.

It won't harm your motor in anyway.

Re: Yamaha outboard question

when you tie the 2 batteries together the fully charged one will be dumping its charge into the discharged one until they are equal in voltage.
You may need to charge both batteries once on shore if you go that route.

Yeah, I thought I would have enough to start the motor to get me back to the ramp, then charge when I get home. I thought that would be the best way to go.

Re: Yamaha outboard question

why are you using regular lights.... use LED's they are in just about every shape and size.... Ps if you are worried about power there is a great demo about LED Lensers that's the tech info
http://www.ledlenserusa.com/product_info.php?modelNum=8437
this is a demo of what it can do

keep in mind this is a hand help flashlight... i know of companies that have MR's par etc..... i think any battery can handle 3 watts draw :)

cheers
