Need some help concerning a Yamaha outsdrive that bleeds down. The trim in the boat and the trailer trim work fine, or should I say the motor, but the drive will not stay trimmed just bleeds back down. Makes it difficult to trailer. Any ideas what can be done to correct problem?

Thanks!

Re: Yamaha outdrive blleds down

On each side of the trim pump is a slotted plug. These are the check valves that are suppose to keep this from happening. They are either leaking or the manual release on the front of the pump is. Be sure the manual release is pointing straight down and is not resting sideways and not seating.

I checked the manual release and it was pointing straight down. I do not have the battery in the boat yet, but will put it in today. There does no appear to be an leakage from those relief valves either. Anything else I can check?

Thanks

You will not see any leakage around the check valves. The leak is internal and allowing fluid to bypass the check valve.

Can it be rebuilt if that is the problem or does it have to be replaced? Boat is 10yrs old.

You can replace the check valves. They just unscrew. For a check to see if its the check valves, remove them and swap sides. If its stops leaking down, then that's the problem. I may still have some in stock, but would have to do some digging.

Capt Ken, it got to dark to quick last night so did not remove check valve screws and switch. Before I do remove and switch will it leak when I remove the screws? Should outdrive be up or down? Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

Re: Yamaha outdrive blleds down

OK, unlike other trim units, this unit is under pressure when in the down position. That's why your owner's manual tells you not to remove the top fill cap unless the unit is up. Now that I've said that, raise the outdrive, block it up so it won't come down, flip the release tab to remove pressure and then unscrew the check valves. You may lose a small amount but not enough to worry about. Clean the check valves with carb cleaner or something under pressure to blow out any trash, then reassemble. Swap the valves to see if it makes any difference.
