I want to replace my yamaha outdrive with a mercruser. I heard that this is possible and quite easy. Is this true? Any tips?<br />Steve

Yep, its very easy. Remove drive, remove engine, remove transom assembly and install complete mercruiser system because the hole in the transom is about the only thing interchangable. As one of the last Yamaha sterndrive dealers left on this earth, I can feel your pain with trying to keep one of these systems going. We were doing good on supplying parts up till last year and things have kinda gone down hill. What we've started doing for customers that still like the boat but feel insecure with the power setup, is to repower their boats with new Mercruiser sterndrive packages. If you plan to keep the boat for several more years, its the least expensive way to have the dependability of a new boat with about a third of the cost. With some of the parts from the engine takeouts, we've been able to keep some of the folks, not able to afford the repowers, going. If you need information on these Yamaha's, just ask. I can tell you what parts are still available from yamaha and which are not and when to get the crying towel out.

I have a 93 outdrive and a mechanic told me the same thing as you, that you could change to a mer also.

Speaking from experience :(  Yamaha has a lot of us hanging as far as parts go.Not to mention the EXTREME LACK of QUALIFIED maintenance facilities. As I am not boat smart the best I can say is "Captain Ken Is THE MAN"!!!!

Yamaha produce the sterndrive in 89 and 90. They were sold to boat builders who warehoused them and was still installing them in boats as late as 95. I would need to check to be sure pricing hasn't changed but we were installing 4.3 carbed systems for somewhere around $7800 and 4.3 injected units for $9100. Both with Alpha drives. Being Yamaha used 33c cables, we were able to get the Mercruiser adapters for the cables and use the same instruments and controls thus saving some cost for the owners. The Yamaha prop will also fit the Mercruiser drive.
