I have a 1994 rinker with a 4.3 and a yamaha outdrive. Wish I had researched a little more before buying cuz i now find out yamaha outdrive parts are few and far between. Mine is in the shop now because of a shifting issue. I am told parts are very expensive and hard to find, would prob. be best to replace entire outdrive with a new or used one. Im not aginst spending some money to fix it, but not a ton. Anyone point me in the right direction for parts or a replacement?

Or a work-around to keep it goin'...

As to swappin' the drive to something Different,...
It can be done, but Not Just the Drive,...

You'll have to swap Everything, from the Pulleys to the Prop...

I don't seem to have a problem finding parts for them. Actually we do a pretty good mail order business with them. Most of the parts are still available from Yamaha. But realize that most of the mechanics today was in diapers when these units were built. Biggest problem is most shops don't want to take time to find the parts.
As for shift cables, how many do you want? Got them stacked up by my desk.

What about trying the drilling of the bearing option before starting to replace parts? Capt Ken can provide details.

Drill? Dang is my memory getting fuzzy in my old age. Lots to check before he gets to that. If the mechanics don't have the time to research parts, they sure don't want to split the drive.

Thanks for the advice......the cable is fine, but im told its almost impossible to put outdrive in and out of gear with a good size set of pliers. My original problem was when idleing down coming to a dock or the trailer, when i went to neutral to put in reverse to slow me down or turn to the trailer, sometimes it would kill my engine, not always, but more often than not. Only if you revved it a bit before changing directions did it not die, so i figured the cable was the issue. Other than that, i had zero issues with any of it. Kind of dissapointed being told it was a serious outdrive prob with only this problem.

Re: yamaha outdrive

Your shift fork is just sticking in its bushing. Simple problem to correct as long as you're not dealing with village idiots. The cutout in the transom is the same as a Mercruiser.

The upper and lower halves of the drive have to be split and the bushing holding the bronze shift fork has to be drilled out a size larger. The drilling is to keep the bushing from seizing the shift fork again. Common problem.

Is splitting the upper and lower drives on the Yammie the same as a merc?

Re: yamaha outdrive

so, you are saying i could bolt a mercruiser in place of my yamaha? and to split upper and lower drives, is there any special tooling that needs to be purchased. The mechanic kept telling me that he didnt have the proper tools to put it back together if taken apart?

If you change from the Yammie to a Merc, everything aft of the coupler needs changing - it's not just a matter of dropping the yammie leg and bolting on a mercruiser.
As for splitting the drive, I seem to manage it, as well as bolting the thing back up again, with a simple socket set, a couple of spanners, a soft-face mallet and little else.

All is needed is regular tools. Nothing special as Triman said.

thats great to knw...i know now what the weekend has in store. I was worried to the point of going to sell the boat 'as is' and take a huge loss. Would it be worth my while in the long run to swap to the mercruiser, or keep goin with the yamaha. Thanks again for all your alls info

Re: yamaha outdrive

Im sure they do, but everyone round here has nothing good to say about the Yamaha. Im just fine with it. When its workin proper, it does an excellent job. just hard to find parts and someone that is willing to work on it. I actually took it to a shop knowing no different and he turned me away cuz it was an "oddball" Yamaha and impossible to get parts. He was recommended by a ton of ppl.

Im glad I found some ppl on here that know whats goin on and pointed me in the right direction to fix it. Now I will and hopefully that's all it is

Re: yamaha outdrive

Make sure to pick up the Clymer manual for your drive. Like everyone else said, regular shop tools will do the job. There is some real important info in that manual that you will need to pull it apart, and reassemble.
The drives are actually really good. Most consumables are still available. I've had to cut my own gaskets a couple times, but no big deal.
Whatever part you need, capt ken has, so you are always just a week away worst case.
You will have to learn to wrench though, if you don't. The book I suggested will take you a long way.
Search eBay for the book.

If you're handy you'll be okay. I just put my Yamaha L4 back on the water today from a Winter long semi overhaul. I always cruise Craigslist and Ebay for parts so that I can stockpile for rainy days. It's been a great learning experience.

Thanks so much all for having me take it apart. I found out it was only corrosion in the shifting fork. All i need now is a gasket set to put it back toget and all will be good.Does anyone know where I could find a gasket set?
