Yamaha Pro 50 Arcing at battery

My buddy has a pro 50 (circa 1985 ?). It occasionally has a problem which has been described in other posts - starter just clicks and won't turn the motor over. Battery connections have been cleaned and are solid, but we will do the same for the ground connection at the motor.

My question is - would a bad ground cause arcing at the battery connection? When the starting is just clicking and not turning the motor over, there is lots of arcing at the battery terminal. Just noticed this last night as we left the battery cover off while turning the key.

You should check, clean and grease all connections....sounds like your battery terminals are corroded...clean with wire brush until shiny, some grease, tighten. Damp marine environment is tougher on connections than say, an automobile.

I use Walmart Green Marine Grease for everything, but that said, any grease will help keep the moisture/corrosion off the metal contacts...heck, I've used a Chapstick when nothing else available!.....not a big blob of grease, just rub some on there with your fingertips!
