I have been reading through this forum for sometime now...seems like Capt. Ken is the foremost authority on these drives. I have a 1994 VIP powered by a 5.0 Yamaha, the boat was a barely used, local freshwater only boat (less then 200 hours), but sit idle for several years, I replaced (after finally finding an old timer mechanic) the exhaust bellows and the shifter cable assembly and boot, as well and the water pump impeller, and replaced all gear oils, everything seems fine( have had it in the water and runs perfectly as far as I can tell), So finally getting around to my question, is there anything else any of you would reccomend looking at or replacing on the outdrive? I plan to keep this boat for a while, and any preventative maintainence I can do now, would benefit me later I am sure. I appreciate any and all feedback, thanks

Welcome to Iboats!
Other than the usual greasing ujoints and bearing and keeping the gearlube changed, inspecting bellows every year, impeller every couple years you should have it covered..

Re: Yamaha sterndrive

thought of another question...i cant seem to get the speedometer working, i cleaned the port on the bottom of the outdrive, but still get no reading on the odometer. This particular boat has the digital gauges, both the speedometer, and the tack/fuel gauge are digital, the tach seems to be farily accurate, the fuel gauge is kinda temperamental, but I think thats due to a bad grounding issue. Anyone have any suggestion on how to make the speedometer start working. or should i just pull it and put in a whole new one?

The Speedo works on pressure,Try blowing some compressed air in the intake hole on the drive .Or unhook the tube from the back of the speedo and blow air out. Its possible the hose is pinched somewhere with a wire tie or something. You could add a plastic speedo pitot to the back of the transom and run a new tube to the dash. The pick up hole in the drive can get plugged up pretty easy..
