I have a 2000 saltwater seires yamaha 115 since i have owned it the head blew for no reason, i lost the ability to charge the batteries and now i am out of the water again for loss of power at speeds higer than 1900 rpm. waiting for the marina to have enough time to service it, looks like three weeks out. other than that it runs fine.

Wow, it sucks to be you adamsrib, sorry to hear of the problems. It just proves that some bad apples always get thru, being a quality engineer for the auto industry I can attest to that. <br />I have a 2001 200hp SS, only problem is the oil gage always reads full, have appointment to get it fixed. Other than that runs great.

I would never again buy anythig with the name yamaha. Have f40tlry 2000. Problems never stop. When you buy repair parts you pay through deep pockets. Cannot afford! Will buy johnson or evenrude next time.

on the 115, most likly blew due to fuel issues, most likly whats wrong now.
pop a fuel pump diaphram and it blows, typically a connecting rod or a wristpin. clog a main jet and it blows, usually takes out a piston ring and erodes the piston on the edge of the crown.
a look at the piston will tell the tale.
regulators usually bite the dust due to faulty batteries or using wing nuts on the cable ends and simply dont get them tight.
on the 200, doesnt have an oil level guage.
the far right bar will always be green until the remopte tank gets so low automatic oil transfer is prohibiuted then the center bar lights. about 15 min later the far left red bar lights and an audible is set and RPM reduction occurs.

on the F40, that motor sucked, carbs are very touchy, ign parts are iffy, however its a mercury painted silver blue. yamaha didnt make any part of the 2000 F40.
I do have some well maintained V4 and V6 engines that were sold new at salty dawg marina that still go almost every weekend and they date back to the 80's.
I started there in 2000 and when they shut down everything came here so a lot of those motors I installed in the early 2000 time frame.
and then, ya got what I did last week.
F115 2007 model.
smoked 2 pistons and the fuel stank.
replaced the powerhead and cyl head under warrenty, cleaned the fuel system and pumped the tank on his nickle.
seatrial, 5000 RPM max.
looked up the PDI sheet, original Al prop was 131/4 x15.
now the hull has a T-top and a 13 1/4x18 ss wheel.
if he doesnt reprop it correctly he has NO warrenty anymore.
bad fuel, coupled with a severe overprop = smoked pistons EVERY time.
is that a Yamaha issue or a customer issue?
most customers are their own worst enemy, then ya got idiot techs. the combination can be very bad.
last new hire here used to be a field service rep with Yamaha, he lasted 9 days and everything he did is a comeback.

I own a 2000 F100 that I bought new in August 1999. It is on a Lund ProV 1775. I have done all my own maintenance and repairs. I had to replace the water pump impeller once and the power tilt and trim needed a valve replaced. It is used mostly in fresh water but has some salt water use. Other than that it has run flawlessly for over 10 years. I have been very happy with this motor.

In Australia Yamaha has an enviable reputation for sheer reliability...they are extensively used on charter boats, tour boats, professional fishing boats and pleasure and private fishing boats. I would struggle to buy any other brand after owning a 93 Yamaha for the last 6 years or so after owning new Merc, old Merc and old Evinrude and Tohatsu - all 2 stroke.

All makes can have a lemon, but the general consensus over here is that ETEC has the most problems and they go up from there to the least problems being Yammy and Honda.

Cheers

I have a 2000 C90TLRY on a Boston Whaler Montauk and it's the best outboard I've ever owned (and I've owned four other brands ) Just don't try to feed it less than perfect fuel ! I'm very satisfied .
