Well, you really need to get this screw out and replaced, along with the o-ring, so get a very small chisel and hammer, or, if there's ANY slot left get an impact driver(avail. everywhere) for 20 bucks. Be oh so careful not to even get lint into the system, it's oh so sensetive.

the system is normally self bleeding, cycle it up and down a few times.
and yes cleanliness with that system is above godliness. it does not like debris.
however if the orings are not leaking and the manual release valve has not moved its no worries, some had left hand threads and are marked as such on the bracket , most the time.

Thanks for the quick replies.
The head is pretty much gone so my impact will have no effect.
rodbolt:

Ive been running the motor in both directions with no movement. Just the trim motor running & sounding like it's dry. The trim pistons are all the way down, I retracted them when I changed the seals to take any load off the caps.

Does that model have the allen head bleed screw located at the base of the motor? It bleeds the air out of the pump section. Getting old, can't remember if that one had it or not.

Re: Yamaha Tilt Screw Stripped NEED HELP!

if the pistons are fully retracted you may not have any fluid in the pump.
are you doing this on the bench or on the motor?
thats why I said Most, the service manual will indicate if its a non-self bleeding model.
1984 was a whale of a long time agao and they all dissovled, I mean left , this area years ago.
only thing I can remember is I have personally never had to bleed the system on a big 3 cyl. of course thats just memory.

Re: Yamaha Tilt Screw Stripped NEED HELP!

I'm doing this on the motor. It's a 1987 but they are the same per my clymers. The Clymers says to keep cycling the system but its not moving at all. My brother mentioned pulling a vacuum to get the air out as is done with noisy powersteering pumps. Anyone ever try this? Any other suggestions are welcome please!
The stripers are in and I'm land bound!

JR

The trim units changed drastically in 1986 with the v-4 and V-6 motors. Not sure this is true for the 3 cylinders.
