Yamaha Trim / Tilt Issue

Hey guys,
I woke up this morning to go fishing and the engine wont tilt up.

2001 Yamaha 4 Stroke

The switch clicks like it is trying to turn it on, and going down I can hear it working a little....slowly went down. Up...nothing but a click.

It almost seems like an battery issue where she just doesnt have the power to puch it up. Battery says it has volts, but amps are for pushing power. I am swapping some batteries around to see if that is it.

Anything else I should be looking at right now?

Thanks,
Dave

what will it do if you use the tt on the motor? check your battery terminals. disconnect and clean.

Same thing whether on the tt at the throttle or tt on the engine.

Tried 3 batteries, clean terminals, clean connections.

Nothing changed with anything so far.

The motor will start perfect so I know I have good battery connection and good volts/amps

Thanks,
Dave

Do you have any leaks or hydraullic oil on the outside of the unit? If air gets in the system it will sputter and not function proper. there is a procedure for filling and bleeding air from the sys. but if you have a leak youll need to fix that first, if thats the problem.

no leaks that I can see.

With a leak it seems as i would hear the motor running, just not pushing. I hear the switch but nothing happens.

Re: Yamaha Trim / Tilt Issue

Well, I got the engine raised so I could get to everything.

I took the cover off the motor.......very damp!

So while watching the engine I hit the switch.....little puffs of smoke everytime I touched the switch!

So, I think I have my problem! Now to find a new motor at a reasonable price.

I anyone has other ideas I should look into?

Thanks,
Dave

if memory serves me correctly, you have to remove one side of the "leg" to get to the motor, not a big deal, but make sure you support the tilt tube on the side you take off, or remove engine and do it that way, not hard just a *****, good luck

Well sometimes all you have to do is walk to the other side and open your eyes! I stayed on the same side yesterday and couldnt see what was right in front of me.

Please click the attachment and take a look at the wire on the left and let me know what you think. Its not totally cut but surely frayed enough that I know exactly whats causing me issues.

Where do I go from here?
