yamaha v6 4.3 sterndrive shifting problem

The previous owner said he replaced the bellows on the outdrive and now it will not go into gear. The prop spins freely. I'm sure it was assembled wrong so I will take it back apart and re install. What should I look for. Also looks like he used some kind of gasket maker. I'd like to reinstall cleaner.

Take the set screw out, then unscrew the oval nut, should be on 17 turns, remove slide. Then see if it's the cable or slide.

Thanks the slide itself was bound up like someone took a pair of pliers to it to unscrew it instead of getting a long 17 inch socket.

replaced with a new cable and shifts smoothly
