To clear up some confusion on one question in trivia contest.

from Wikipedia:

Yamato (大和), named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was the first built (the lead ship) of the Yamato class. She and her sister ship Musashi were the largest, heaviest battleships ever constructed , weighing 65,027 tons . She carried the heaviest armament ever fitted to a battleship; nine 46 cm (18.1 inch) guns.

As an aside, a third ship of this class was never completed as a battleship, but the hull was converted to the largest WWII carrier--the Shinano. This carrier was sunk by the USS Archerfish before operations could begin.--Jinx

By comparison, the Bismark:

Design of the ship started in 1930. The construction of the second French Dunkerque class battleship made redesign necessary, and Bismarck's displacement increased to 42,600 tons , although officially her tonnage was still only 35,000 tons in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty. The prototype of the proposed battleships envisaged under Plan Z, she was intended primarily as a commerce-raider, having fuel stores as large as those of battleships intended for operations in the Pacific Ocean. Still, she was capable of engaging any enemy warship on at least equal terms.

Her keel was laid down at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg on 1 July 1936. She was launched on 14 February 1939 and commissioned in August 1940 with Kapitän zur See Ernst Lindemann in command.

Her armament was 8 15" guns.

Jinx

Those are truely awesome ships. I still say the Iowa class could take either Yamato or Bismarck. Bigger guns than Bismarck, better firecontrol and rate of fire than Yamato.

I dont wont to be on the beach recieving fire from any of them. Or 15 miles inland for that matter. It was a different type of war than we fight nowdays.

The last I heard, our remaining battleship, the USS Wisconsin, is headed for oblivion as a museum. It is currently moored in Norfolk and is a semi-attraction now, but could be reactivated. I understand the USMC is not happy about its' being stricken.

Incidently, the Wisconsin was the largest of the Iowa class BBs. Its' bow was replaced after the Korean War damage by one taken from the never completed USS Kentucky. A slight error resulted in a 3" longer bow than originally.

Jinx

Would this contest be fought at maximum range of the main guns? Day time or night time?

An advantage the Japanese Imperial Navy had was that their main gun charges used "flashless" gunpoweder. At night they did not light up the their area with every salvo they fired.

U.S. Navy of course was miles ahead on radar and using it for weapons control.

The Yamato guns had a range of 25 miles, the Iowa class was 23. Not sure of the accuracy at that range.

The battleships were hardly, if ever, used for the purpose they were designed for. The line of battle was the dream of many an old admiral, but in reality the battleships had their most useful role as floating gun platforms pouring fire into enemy shore positions.

The Battle of Jutland is often referred to as a clash between battleships, but in reality was a battlecruiser action. The Germans broke it off before the main British units could join in.

The British battlecruisers were a flawed design. Their armament was that of a battleship, but the armor was that of a cruiser..engaging a more powerful enemy unit was suicide. After the loss of by explosion, I believe, 3 battlecruisers in a short time at Jutland, the British Admiral commanding was heard to remark: "There seems to be something wrong with our ships today."

Jinx

You ever think they made the Yamoto merely as a diversionary target?

A bunch of ships spent tons of time tracking her when she wasnt any more of a threat than any other battleship.

Ken

Ken:

An effective use of any fleet is as a diversionary target. It is one of the foundations of Mahan's theories.

Even if your units are outclassed, their very existence is a threat--a fleet in being. The wise underdog will not risk unnecessary losses and will preserve the potential threat to its opponent. Japan's squandering of virtually its' entire fleet at Leyte Gulf made absolutely no sense and can best be described as a peculiarly Japanese mass suicide by its navy.

jinx, thanks for the lesson on naval warfare tactics. But really, in the end, didn't we just nuke 'em to win that war? ;)

I was against decomisioning the USS Wisconsin, it was upgraded again in the 80's and can be easily upgraded again. with its modern fire control system at 23 miles I can ask what window do I hit sir?
actually I think the accuracy at max range was plus or minus about 30ft.
there is a lot that goes into it, even bore erosion for everyshot fired is taken from the fire control smooth log and entered. most the time :) .
one of my instructors at FC(A) school was a gunnersmate on one of the big battle ships, Ipwa I think.
he was telling a tale about the North Koreans were on the backside of a hill and they figguered out how to move the mount to max elevation and lob shells like a motar to hit the back of the hill with 2600 pound rounds.
that makes a rather large crater :) .
he is also the one that was killing use the last week with the fire control solution test.
took me 2 hours to complete the solution.
we were allowed a calculator at least

Those battlewagons are nice, but when America really wants to flex it's muscles they send us. :)

Alden's ship:
