Yammie 115 takes long to start and sometimes floods

I have a 2000 Yamaha 115. It runs great when I get it started. It takes many many cranks, it will fire just about every time, but won't stay running, until after many many cranks. Once it's running and warmed up, I can shut it off and it will crank the first time evertime. I can't give it any throttle while cranking cold or it will flood. I pull the plugs and they are soaked. I've owned many boats and I've always cranked a 2 stroke by moving the throttle right where is starts to to get hard to move, then push the key for choke and turn the key and it always would fire off, if not the first time then the second, but not as many as with this motor. I've recently purchased this boat and motor and the previous owner said it was hard to start and I watched him start it and he didn't give it any gas, he just choked and cranked, choked and crank and repeated until it finally started. I felt he wasn't starting it right, that it needed more fuel, so that's what it tried and I flooded the darn thing. The plugs are firing, I checked that. They are black, doesn't that point to rich mixture? They were also gapped to .040 to .043, the manual states .035 to .039, so I re-gapped. I don't know where the fuel mix adjustment is on the carbs. Any recommendations. thanks.

move the throttle to the point where it starts about 2000 RPM, push the chike switch, could be a toggle or a push to choke keyswitch. then while holding the choke crank it. when it fire release the choke, but be prepared to tap it once or twice.
when was the last major tune-up ?

Have you tried not choking it?
Could be lots of things at this point, but I'd start by checking the choke (make sure it's not sticking) and check the spark (do you have a spark tester)?

Opps, when I say "make sure the chokes not sticking" I'm assuming it's not a primer choke system (not familiar with your specific engine).

I know my C115 only like NGK plugs anything else it was hard to start. Don't mess with too much adjustments they are probably correct unless previous owner monkeyed with them. Just ask him. Hope this helps.

I have a 2002 115hp and had the same problem. If you choke by pushing the key in, check to see if your solenoid that actuates the choke is adjusted properly. Take the cover off of your engine. The solenoid is located, as you look a the front of your engine, on the front left of your engined above the carburator. It is attached with 2 bolts. Loosen those bolts and slide the solenoid up (it is adjustable). then tighten. this will tighten the choke linkage. if the choke does not close all the way, it will have a hard time starting when cold. this takes 5 minutes. It fixed my starting problems. Please try this before anything else. It works!

Re: Yammie 115 takes long to start and sometimes floods

Hello,

Did you ever find the solution with the flooding when cold? I have a 85 Yamaha 115 and it is also hard to start when cold. The choke will close all the way, so it is not the choke solenoid problem. I can smell some gas when cranking, so it makes me think it is also flooding. But I may be wrong. It will start eventually, but it just takes alot of cranking.

Once it fires up, I can shut it right off, and it will start again with just one crank. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this or things to try? Anything would be appreciated.

Thanks,
