Purchased 1996 Yamaha 85. I know the prior owner, they took excellent care of the boat and engine. Engine appears like it is brand new. Sat for 4 years prior to my purchase.
Towed boat from NC to NJ. Drained fuel tank. 50:1 mix Castro marine oil. Fuel ball very hard, used plyers to pump. Took much time to get fuel to engine, however once there, engine started right up. Engine quickly overheated. - Replaced the impeller - Engine does not overheat.
Engine sounds great - starts right up every time. Will not exceed 2500 rpm in the water. In Nuetral engine will rev, in gear, in water, runs slow. Engine responds to first 1/3 of throttle. Nothing on other 2/3 of throttle.
Carb pins were removed and carbs sprayed. Mech. says they look too good to do a rebuild unless nothing else works.
Manual states that when engine overheats the engine limits the rpms to protect the engine. The original overheat was on shore. Is it possible the rev-limit switch is not re-setting? Where is the rev-limit switch. I do not have a manual yet. Is a carb re-build my only option? Thanks for looking.

As deejaysee says, not much doubt you have a fuel restriction and the carbs should be done. I have never been able to see the inside from the outside on carbs.

Took a look at the spark plugs. A little oil, but no serious carbon. Ran 16 gallons with Carb cleaner through her today. Now it runs worse. Can not get an idle without throttling 1/3. Does this sound like progress to anyone? Should I run more through, or just go for the carb job?

the carb cleaner obviously loosened up some dirt and is now stuck in a jet etc. ... no doubt that you will have to take off the carbs and clean them .....
