Trying to test my 115 and the manaul keeps telling me to only use the yamaha special pocket tester because any other ohm meter will be off?
What? isnt a ohm a ohm? Would a 2k resistor be measured differntly with yamahas special $100 tester? I call BS.
Whats your opinion?

check the input specs on the meters, some are different than others and will show different readings.
if all your measuring is a single resistor then any meter will work, however if you toss in some diodes and other devices the meters input impedance and measuring currents can make a difference.
what are ya trying to measure ?

Re: yammy special pocket meter?

My motor is going into rev limiting state (2k rpm max)with no buzzer going off.(yes the buzzer works) I have a 91 115 v4 2 stroke yam. I have a digital volt meter and quite handy at fixing stuff. Just wanted to check the CDI and see if that was the cause.
I have a degree is electronics and cant seem to remember ever hearing that ohms can be tested different on different test units. So when I read that I needed the special tester I was quite puzzled.

Re: yammy special pocket meter?

do you have a peak reading meter or a DVA adapter for your DVM? RMS wont work.
if your positive all the alarm systems are in opererating condition the try it again with the pink wire removed from the CDI. testing the CDI output voltage with a peak reading meter will show quickly if its actually RPM reduction.
really rare to see the V4 CDI fail though.
and yes meters vary wildly, some TPS voltages ya have to be very careful with cause some analog meters use to high a voltage for the test.
at least,so far, we dont have to have vacum tube voltmeters.
I never finnished the electives for my degree but I have done it a long time and got some intensive training as a navy FC.

Re: yammy special pocket meter?

the cause was a loose ground connection to the battery.
