it's my understanding that this production year model was occuring during the Bombardier(?) transition period. through hear-say, i've heard that the quality control was quite poor and a number of problems have resulted. has anybody else heard or experienced this first hand?

my experience has been this:
my father lent me his boat for the summer. its a 2000 1446 Weldbilt with a 2000 25hp electric start Johnson. on the 3rd of this month, i was on the lake, idling at the time, when the motor quit with a sudden thud. i thought i might have hit something, but i was in 30 feet of water in a very well traveled channel. i inspected the prop, but it showed no damage. to make a long story short, one of the bolts holding the stator assembly had worked its way lose and wedged between one of the permanent magnets on the flywheel. this caused the entire stator assy to rotate about 130 degrees out of the norm, causing much pain and suffering to the throttle linkage, the flywheel and myself.

i took it to the repair shop and the mechanic there had never seen anything like it. i asked him about the quality control rumor and he said he had heard and seen firsthand the same thing. he told me that he had had 2000 year models come in with loose screws on the coils, but never what had happened to mine. the final outcome was a new flywheel(the old one had a large portion of one of the magnets missing and a visible fracture for a future chunk to come loose) and some rather pricey throttle parts.

what experiences has anybody on this forum had with 2000 Johnson/Evinrude outboards? thanks for any info and good luck on the water.

Since you have no warranty on this engine, i would assume the worst is possible, even if only for your own peace of mind. Pay to have it inspected by a qualified Johnson technician. These were very good engines historically, a little prevention might just be worth a ton of cure! Pay particular close attention to the hose & wiring routing. These would be the points that suffered had there truly been a production problem.

the boat is at an authorized Johnson service center as we speak. i hope to pick it up early next week. ive always understood Johnson to have a quality product(even though this is the 1st ive dealt with) and i wondered if Bombardier was causing harm to Johnson's good name.

Howdy, JPB.

I view it as just the opposite. Johnson engines were always very good engines until the late 90s, when the company was obviously failing and worker morale crashed.

Quality control was very bad and did a lot of damage to the brand's reputation.

After OMC went bankrupt and Bombardier bought the brand and assets There was a thorough overhaul of manufacturing and quality control methods and procedures.

Since then Johnson engines are as good as they ever were, some say even better.

Bad as i hate to admit it, Bombardier has made great strides in brining back the good name of Johnson & Evinrude. Their products are better than i can ever remember.

To clarify some dates and production:

OMC filed for bankruptcy around December 23rd, 2000.

Bombardier picked up what they wanted of the OMC assets in early March of 2001. They did not begin production until late September 2001, which was well into the 2002 model year.

Therefore, any 2000 or 2001 model year engines were built by OMC.

-John

thanks for the replys and information. i talked to the mechanic today and it looks like the plate that the stator assy mounts to is also cracked, so the cost of repair just went up another $30-$40 bucks. i wont complain too loud because it still could have been worse.
