Year and model # needed

I recently bought a used boat and motor. The motor appears to be quite new but I cannot find a nameplate. It is a Johnson 9.9 HP. There is a disk on the engine block with the number C8247780 stamped on it. I assume that this is the serial number. Can anyone tell me the year (and model # ?) based on this? I need this information before I can do even the most basic maintenance and repairs.

Recommendations for a good (but reasonably priced) manual would also be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Glen

Glen

We need the model number to do you any good with the year. Look on the transom clamp for a tag that would have the numbers/letters. Also, check out that plug again and see if there are any more numbers or letters. If it's between a 1980 and 1998 it will contain these letters.

1980 - CS 1985 - CO 1990 - ES 1995 - EO
1981 - CI 1986 - CD 1991 - EI 1996 - ED
1982 - CN 1987 - CU 1992 - EN 1997 - EU
1983 - CT 1988 - CC 1993 - ET 1998 - EC
1984 - CR 1989 - CE 1994 - ER

Re: Year and model # needed

Hi Glen,

I have the exact same problem, but with a 15 hp evinrude (probably ~76-82 vintage). I posted here about a month ago, but haven't found the solution. It won't be a problem for the basic things, but ignition parts might be different amongst different years. I was able to buy a new starter pinion (gear on the recoil) without the model #. Also, notice that each part usually is stamped with a part number, so if you have one in hand, you'll likely be able to get the right replacement part.

When I posted, "Bear" responded with a couple of useful links... here they are.

http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

http://www.boaterssupply.com/default.asp?a=set&id=1&name=Evinrude

By the way, my 15 hp runs good, but is pretty beat up on the outside. So, I wasn't totally aghast that the plate was missing. Seems typical for it's overall condition. Also I know the guy that I bought it from and that he had had it for about 8-10 years. Having said that, once I realized that the plate was missing (when needing parts), it made me wonder whether it might have been stolen at some point in the past, the plate removed, and sold to my friend. You might want to tuck the bill of sale & the seller's info somewhere secure, in case someone (the dealership ?) directs the mounties to you, thinking maybe you've stolen the motor. I don't mean to make you paranoid (like me  ), but holding onto the bill of sale and contact info of the seller always seems like a good idea to me.

Good luck,

Brent

Thanks Rick, Brent:
yeah, I started to wonder too when I saw that the name plate was missing but I trust the guy I bought it from (but who knows where he bought it). I have looked at the engine block tag again and it is absolutely clear "C8247780". The throttle grip uses a cable connection (rather than the gears) so I believe this makes the motor an '84 or younger. It runs extremely well although my wife complains that the cold-pull is too hard. Is there a decompression switch I did not know about?

Again, thanks for your quick replies. I went out-of-town and only saw them now.

Glen
